Chapter 14: The Hidden Experiment

My mother’s words changed everything.

The inheritance.

The trust.

The marriages.

The lies.

They were all pieces of something bigger.

And I hated that I believed her.

Because even after everything she had done…

part of me still knew my mother was afraid.

Not pretending.

Afraid.

Detective Harris questioned her for hours.

Daniel and I waited outside.

Ava sat beside Rachel, quietly coloring in a notebook.

Watching them together felt strange.

Rachel had hurt me.

But she had also protected Ava.

The world had become impossible to divide into good and evil.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had blood on their hands.

Finally, Detective Harris came out.

“She’s talking.””

I stood.

“What did she say?””

He looked serious.

“The trust documents were a distraction.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“The money exists, but it was never the main goal.””

I felt cold.

“Then what was?””

Detective Harris opened a folder.

Inside were medical records.

Old ones.

Very old ones.

“These families have been studying the genetic marker for decades.””

Daniel stared.

“Studying?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

The detective hesitated.

“To create a child who could inherit specific traits.””

I felt sick.

“You mean…”

He nodded.

“They believed your daughter’s genetics made her valuable.””

My hand immediately went to my stomach.

Lily.

My baby.

Not a person to them.

A result.

A discovery.

A possession.

Daniel looked furious.

“This is insane.””

“Yes.””

“Why would my family do this?””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Because your family believed they were preserving their legacy.””

I thought about Rachel.

My mother.

My father.

Everyone talking about bloodlines.

Everyone talking about the future.

Nobody talking about the children.

Ava suddenly stood.

“I know something.””

Everyone turned.

Rachel looked nervous.

“Ava…”

The little girl looked at Detective Harris.

“My grandmother had a room.””

“What kind of room?””

Ava lowered her voice.

“A room where she kept pictures.””

My heart stopped.

“Pictures of what?””

Ava looked at me.

“Babies.””

The hospital suddenly felt colder.

“Where is this room?””

Rachel answered.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“Your mother showed it to me once.””

Daniel stared.

“You knew?””

Rachel nodded.

“I didn’t understand what it was.””

“Where?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“At your parents’ old house.””

The police searched the house that evening.

I went with them.

I needed to see it.

I needed to know.

The hidden room was behind a wall panel in my parents’ study.

A place I had been in hundreds of times.

A place where my father kept books.

A place where my mother served coffee.

And behind the wall…

was an entire archive.

Photographs.

Medical reports.

Family trees.

Names.

Dates.

Children.

My hands shook as I looked through them.

There were dozens.

Detective Harris examined the files.

“This goes back generations.””

Daniel picked up one folder.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

A photograph.

A baby.

A note attached.

*Subject 17.*

My stomach turned.

“No.””

Daniel looked through another folder.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

He held a document.

A birth record.

My name was written on it.

But underneath it was something impossible.

A second name.

A code.

*Subject 31.*

I stepped back.

“No.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Emma…”

I shook my head.

“I’m not a subject.””

Nobody answered.

And that was the worst part.

Because everyone knew.

My entire life.

My childhood.

My marriage.

My pregnancy.

Maybe none of it had been random.

Then an officer called from another room.

“Detective!””

We rushed over.

The officer held a small box.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds of them.

Detective Harris opened the first one.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“These are from your grandmother.””

I frowned.

“My grandmother died when I was young.””

“Yes.””

He handed me the letter.

The handwriting was old.

The words were faded.

But one sentence was clear.

*If Emma ever becomes pregnant, remove her from this family before they take her child.*

I felt my knees weaken.

My grandmother had known.

She had tried to warn someone.

But she had been too late.

Then Detective Harris opened another letter.

The final one.

The one written years later.

The one that explained everything.

It was addressed to me.

May you like

And the first line made my blood run cold.

*Emma, if you are reading this, your mother already failed to protect you.*
