Chapter 1: The Kick That Changed Everything

“My pregnant sister kicked me in the stomach, and two days later the doctors told me my blood was the reason someone wanted my baby gone.””

I still hear the sound my body made when I hit the ground.

It was not loud. That was the terrifying part.

The backyard was full of music, laughter, and the smell of barbecue. My parents had invited everyone over for a Sunday family dinner, the kind of gathering where they always said, “No matter what happens, family comes first.””

I used to believe that.

I was six months pregnant with my daughter, Lily, and I had spent the entire afternoon smiling while everyone touched my belly and asked when she would arrive.

My sister, Rachel, was the only person who never smiled when she looked at me.

She stood across the lawn with her arms crossed, watching me like I had stolen something from her.

“Why are you always acting like everyone’s favorite?”” Rachel asked.

I blinked.

“What are you talking about?””

She laughed without humor.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Emma. Mom and Dad never stop talking about you. Your perfect marriage.

Your perfect house. Your perfect baby.””

I looked around, confused.

“Rachel, this is not the time for this.””

Her face changed.

It was a look I had never seen before.

A mix of anger and something darker.

“You really think you’re better than me, don’t you?””

I stepped back.

“Where is this coming from?””

Then she walked closer.

Too close.

“Maybe you should lose something for once.””

The words barely registered before she shoved me.

I caught myself for a second, one hand reaching toward the patio chair behind me.

Then Rachel lifted her leg.

And kicked.

Straight into my stomach.

Pain exploded through me.

I collapsed onto the grass, both arms wrapping around my belly.

“Rachel!”” someone screamed.

I could barely hear anything.

The world became blurry.

All I could think was Lily.

Move.

Please move.

I pressed my hands against my stomach.

“Come on, baby girl,” I whispered.

“Please.””

Nothing.

No tiny kick.

No flutter.

Nothing.

“Call an ambulance!”” my husband, Daniel, shouted.

He was suddenly beside me, his face pale as he held my hand.

“Emma, look at me. Stay with me.””

I tried to answer, but my throat wouldn’t work.

Across the yard, Rachel was crying.

But not because I was hurt.

She was crying because our cousin Olivia had her phone out.

“She filmed it,” Rachel said quickly.

Everyone turned.

Rachel wiped her tears.

“She filmed everything. She knows Emma attacked me first.””

I stared at her.

For a moment, I thought I was hallucinating.

“You kicked me,” I whispered.

Rachel shook her head.

“No, I didn’t.””

“Rachel…”

“You came at me. I pushed you away. It was an accident.””

My parents ran toward her.

Not me.

My mother wrapped her arms around Rachel.

“Oh my God, are you okay?””

My father looked at Rachel’s hands.

“Did Emma hurt you?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

He looked around at my family like he didn’t recognize them.

“She’s pregnant,” he said quietly.

Nobody answered.

“She’s lying on the ground because your daughter kicked her.””

My father stepped forward.

“Watch your tone.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No. You watch what happens next.””

He pulled out his phone.

“911.””

Rachel’s crying became louder.

“I didn’t mean to hurt her.””

But she kept looking at Olivia’s phone.

Not at me.

At the video.

When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics rushed me inside.

Daniel climbed in after me.

Before the doors closed, he looked back at my family.

“Nobody leaves.””

The police arrived minutes later.

And that was when everything got worse.

An officer asked Olivia for the recording.

She handed over the phone.

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

The officer frowned.

“Sir?””

“It’s a family matter.””

“No,” Daniel said from behind him.

“It’s a crime scene.””

My father’s face hardened.

“It was an accident.””

The officer shook his head.

“That’s not your decision to make.””

Then I saw my mother.

She was standing near the kitchen doorway.

Holding a folder.

A thick folder.

When she noticed me looking, her expression changed.

She quickly shoved it behind her back.

“What’s in that folder?”” Daniel asked.

My mother froze.

“Nothing.””

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, I need you to put that down.””

My mother slowly placed it on the table.

The top page was visible.

And even from across the yard, I saw my name.

My hands started shaking.

Because underneath my name were three words that made no sense.

*Trust Fund Agreement Amendment.*

I had no idea why my family had legal documents about my unborn child.

But two days later, when doctors checked my bloodwork at the hospital…

they discovered something that made the police return.

Because the kick from my sister was not what put my baby in danger.

Someone had been poisoning me long before that.

And the person responsible had planned everything.
