Chapter 15: The Letter From The Dead

I held the letter with shaking hands.

My grandmother’s handwriting.

A person who had been gone for years.

A person who somehow knew this day would come.

Daniel stood beside me.

“Do you want me to read it?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

This was mine.

My truth.

I unfolded the paper.

The room disappeared.

Dear Emma,

If you are reading this, then the family has started again.

I paused.

Started again.

My eyes moved down the page.

You were born into a family that does not see children as children. They see bloodlines. They see inheritance. They see proof.

I looked at Lily’s ultrasound photo.

My hands trembled.

I always tried to protect your mother from the truth because she was not strong enough to fight them.

A tear fell.

My mother.

My grandmother knew.

Your father and his family believe the child carrying the marker belongs to them. They believe they have the right to control who raises that child.

But they are wrong.

The child belongs to herself.

I swallowed hard.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Your mother will betray you because she believes fear is the same as love.

I closed my eyes.

That was exactly what she had done.

She thought she was saving me.

But she was destroying me.

The letter continued.

I found the original agreement between the families. It was not a trust.

It was a contract.

A contract created to control generations.

And there is one final truth you must know.

The inheritance was never twelve million dollars.

I stopped.

Detective Harris leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

I kept reading.

The money was only a cover. The real value is in the research attached to the family records.

Research.

My heart pounded.

Your child carries a genetic trait that the families have spent decades trying to reproduce.

They do not want your baby because she is rich.

They want her because they believe she can unlock something.

I looked up.

“Unlock what?””

Nobody knew.

I continued.

There is a reason I hid your records when you were young.

There is a reason I changed your birth documents.

There is a reason your mother never knew the entire truth.

Because you were never supposed to become part of the experiment.

My breath caught.

Experiment.

That word again.

Then the final page.

The last paragraph.

Emma, if they discover the truth, they will come for Lily.

Not for the money.

Not for the trust.

For the child.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

The only person who can stop them is the person you will least expect.

I lowered the paper.

Everyone waited.

“What does it say?””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Rachel.

Then at my mother, sitting under police watch.

My voice was barely audible.

“It says the person who can stop them is someone inside the family.””

Detective Harris frowned.

“Who?””

I looked back at the letter.

There was a name.

A name written underneath the final sentence.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Daniel step backward.

Because it wasn’t my mother.

It wasn’t Rachel.

It wasn’t my father.

It was someone who had been helping us from the beginning.

Someone who had been investigating the family secrets before anyone else.

Someone we trusted.

The letter named:

*Detective Harris.*

The room went silent.

And Detective Harris slowly reached for his weapon.
