Chapter 16: The Detective’s Secret

The room changed the moment we saw Detective Harris reach for his weapon.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The sound of the hospital machines in the hallway suddenly felt louder than anything else.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

A protective instinct.

The same instinct that had made me trust him.

The same instinct that had been broken so many times.

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Relax.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Put the gun away.””

Harris slowly lowered his hand.

“I knew this day would come.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

He looked at the letter.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“You knew my grandmother wrote that?””

“No.””

“Then why does it have your name?””

For the first time since meeting him, Detective Harris looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

He took a breath.

“Because your grandmother knew my father.””

The room went silent.

Daniel frowned.

“Your father?””

Harris nodded.

“My father was one of the researchers connected to the family project.””

I felt sick.

“You’re one of them?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

Almost desperately.

“I was the reason the project started falling apart.””

Detective Harris sat down.

“My father spent his life believing he was helping humanity. He convinced himself that studying genetics was more important than individual lives.””

He looked at Lily’s ultrasound.

“But eventually, he realized what they were doing.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“What were they doing?””

Harris looked at her.

“Creating controlled bloodlines.””

The words sounded unreal.

“They weren’t just tracking children with the marker. They were manipulating marriages, pregnancies, and families to produce them.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“My first wife.””

Harris nodded.

“She was one of the people they targeted.””

Daniel looked away.

His face was filled with pain.

“And Emma?””

Harris looked at me.

“You were supposed to be another success.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“I was chosen?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

The detective hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Your grandmother.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“No.””

“She wasn’t part of the experiment,” Harris said quickly.

“She was trying to expose it.””

“Then why?””

“Because she knew the families would never stop looking for children with the marker.””

He looked at me.

“She changed your records. Hid information. Tried to make you invisible.””

I thought about my childhood.

The missing documents.

The strange stories.

The secrets.

My grandmother had been protecting me.

But she had never told me.

“Why didn’t she just tell me?””

Harris looked down.

“Because she knew knowledge was dangerous.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And you?””

Harris was silent.

Then:

“I became a detective because of my father.””

Nobody spoke.

“He died trying to expose the project. Before he died, he gave me one instruction.””

Harris looked at me.

“Find Emma.””

A chill ran through me.

“How long have you known about me?””

“Years.””

My heart sank.

“You investigated me?””

“I protected you.””

“But you watched me.””

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

I turned away.

Another person who claimed protection.

Another person who decided what I deserved to know.

Then Rachel spoke.

“There’s something wrong.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the letter.

“The handwriting.””

“What about it?”” Harris asked.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Your grandmother wrote this years ago.””

“Yes.””

“But the final sentence was added later.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel pointed.

“Look at the ink.””

Detective Harris took the letter.

His expression changed.

She was right.

The final sentence was darker.

Newer.

Someone had added it.

Someone had written Harris’s name.

Someone wanted us to suspect him.

The detective looked stunned.

“I didn’t do this.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

Then the lights went out.

The hospital fell into darkness.

A second later, emergency alarms started screaming.

People shouted in the hallway.

Detective Harris grabbed his flashlight.

“Everyone stay here.””

A door slammed somewhere nearby.

Then another.

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

“Ava.””

She ran.

We followed.

The children’s room was empty.

The window was open.

And sitting on the floor was a single piece of paper.

Daniel picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

May you like

Three words were written across it.

*THE HEIR IS GONE.*
