Chapter 9: The Voice From Beyond

Nobody moved.

Claire’s phone continued ringing.

Emily’s name glowed on the screen.

For seven years, that number had been disconnected.

I knew because I had called it after she died.

Over and over.

Just to hear the voicemail.

Just to pretend she was still somewhere in the world.

“How?”” I whispered.

Claire looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

The phone kept ringing.

Lily stared.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to move.

I took the phone from Claire.

My hand hovered over the answer button.

Every logical part of my brain screamed not to pick up.

But grief is not logical.

I pressed accept.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then breathing.

A quiet voice.

“David.””

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from the funeral.

Not from a recording.

From thousands of mornings.

From whispered conversations.

From nights when we promised each other we would grow old together.

“Emily?””

Lily gasped.

“Mommy?””

I turned away immediately.

I couldn’t let her see my face.

The voice on the phone trembled.

“David, listen carefully.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“How is this possible?””

“No questions.””

“Emily, where are you?””

“David.””

The urgency in her voice stopped me.

“You need to protect Lily.””

My eyes filled.

“She’s right here.””

A pause.

Then a broken whisper.

“Is she okay?””

I covered my mouth.

That was Emily.

That was my wife.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

Her.

“She misses you.””

Silence.

Then a quiet sob.

“Tell her I never left her.””

Lily started crying.

“Mommy?””

I looked at the phone.

“How are you alive?””

Another pause.

And then:

“I’m not.””

The room froze.

I looked at Claire.

She looked just as confused.

“What?””

Emily’s voice was softer.

“This is a message.””

A message.

Not a call.

Someone had set this up.

“When was this recorded?””

“Before everything happened.””

“Before you died?””

Silence.

Then:

“Before I disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“You disappeared?””

“David, you have to listen. There was never a safe time to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

“The truth about my father.””

I looked at Claire.

Emily continued.

“He was never my father.””

“We know.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

“What?””

“He wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

I felt cold.

“Then who was?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Emily said:

“Someone you invited into our home.””

I froze.

Claire looked at me.

Mark looked away.

The words echoed.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

I thought of every person in my life.

Every person who knew my family.

Every person who knew Emily.

“Who?””

Emily’s voice broke.

“David, I tried to warn you.””

“Who?””

The line crackled.

Then her final words came.

“Look at the person standing beside you.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Slowly, I turned around.

Claire was standing beside me.

But she wasn’t the only one.

Mark was there too.

And his face had changed.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Guilt.

“Mark?””

He looked at me.

His eyes filled with regret.

“David…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Please let me explain.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

He looked down.

“I knew some of it.””

The room went silent.

Claire whispered:

“How?””

Mark didn’t answer.

He reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

An envelope with Emily’s handwriting.

My blood turned cold.

“Where did you get that?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“Emily gave it to me.””

I stared.

“When?””

He swallowed.

“The night before she died.””

My entire world shifted.

“The night before?””

He nodded.

“She told me if anything happened…”

His voice broke.

“…I was supposed to keep you away from the truth.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

Mark looked at me.

“Because she was afraid of you.””

The words cut deeper than anything.

“Afraid of me?””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

He looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“She was afraid of what would happen if you found out who was responsible.””

I grabbed the envelope.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Mark whispered:

“Because Emily made me promise.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

Written in Emily’s handwriting.

*The person who betrayed me is the person David trusts more than anyone.*

I looked up.

And realized the truth was worse than I imagined.

May you like

Because I had been searching for a stranger.

But the person who destroyed my family had been standing beside me for years.
