Chapter 3: The Secret Emily Took to Her Grave
I watched Claire stare at her phone like it was a weapon pointed directly at her.
“Who is he?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her hand slowly lowered.
“You need to leave.””
I almost laughed.
“Excuse me?””
“Please, David. Just go home.””
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
The woman standing in front of me wasn’t the person I thought I loved.
She was someone holding pieces of my past that I never knew existed.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
“No, I can’t.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the window.
Then she whispered, “Because if I tell you, you’ll hate me.””
I thought about Lily crying on the floor.
I thought about Emily’s damaged picture.
“I already don’t recognize you.””
Claire flinched.
That hurt her.
But not as much as what she had done.
She sat down.
“Seven years ago, I was twenty-six. I was working at the hospital during my nursing internship.””
I stayed standing.
“Emily was there for months.””
I looked away.
I knew that.
I knew every day of those months.
Every test.
Every bad result.
Every night I slept in a chair beside her.
“She was kind,” Claire continued.
“Even when she was sick, she worried about everyone else.””
My jaw tightened.
“That sounds like her.””
Claire nodded.
“She talked about you constantly.””
A strange pain moved through me.
“She said you were the only person who made her feel safe.””
I looked at the receipt.
“Then why did you have her ring?””
Claire covered her face.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She lowered her hands.
“Before Emily died, she asked me to help her with something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was afraid.””
My chest tightened.
“Afraid of what?””
Claire looked at me.
“She thought someone was stealing from her.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You have her ring.””
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t steal it.””
“Then why did you pawn it?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was trying to protect it.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
Claire stood and walked to a drawer.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I should have destroyed this years ago.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was another document.
A hospital inventory form.
Emily’s belongings.
A signature.
Claire’s.
“What is this?””
“When Emily was moved to hospice care, her personal items were collected.””
I scanned the page.
Jewelry.
Phone.
Wallet.
Ring.
The ring was marked missing.
My fingers went numb.
“Missing?””
Claire nodded.
“Someone took it before her family received her belongings.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you found it.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
“When?””
“The same week Emily died.””
I stared at her.
“And you pawned it.””
Claire started crying.
“I was young and scared.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She wiped her tears.
“I didn’t pawn it for money.””
“Then why?””
She looked directly at me.
“Because the person who took it threatened me.””
The air left my lungs.
“Who?””
Claire’s phone rang again.
This time, she didn’t ignore it.
She answered.
“Stop calling me.””
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
I couldn’t hear everything.
Only pieces.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Claire turned pale.
“I’m done protecting you.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“You destroyed her life.””
My heartbeat stopped.
Claire looked at me.
The phone slipped from her hand.
The call ended.
“Who was that?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“It was Emily’s brother.””
I froze.
Emily never had a brother.
Not one I knew about.
“What did you just say?””
Claire looked terrified.
“He changed his name after what happened.””
“What happened?””
She grabbed the edge of the table.
“The night Emily died wasn’t just a tragedy.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the door.
Then at me.
Then she said the words that shattered everything I believed about my wife’s final days.
“David… Emily didn’t die believing she was alone.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“She died because she discovered who had betrayed her.””
May you like
And before I could ask another question, Claire whispered one more thing.
“The person who hurt Emily has been standing close to you for years.””
