Chapter 14: The Betrayal Hidden in Plain Sight

Mark didn’t move.

Nobody did.

The message stayed on his screen.

A threat.

A warning.

A confession waiting to happen.

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

That answer hurt.

Because it meant he had been carrying something for years.

“What did you do, Mark?””

He looked at Lily.

Then away.

“I made a choice.””

I stepped forward.

“A choice that involved my wife?””

“Yes.””

My anger exploded.

“You don’t get to protect me from the truth and call it loyalty.””

“I know.””

“You let me suffer.””

“I know.””

“You watched me raise Lily without knowing what Emily was fighting.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I know.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Emily’s father said:

“Tell him.””

Mark looked at him.

“You don’t get to order me.””

The older man smiled.

“You still think you have control.””

I turned.

“You two know each other.””

Mark didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My stomach dropped.

“You knew him.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Mark sat down.

“Because seven years ago, I was investigating the company.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily asked me.””

I stared.

“She trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she write your name?””

“Because she suspected I was being used.””

“Were you?””

Mark looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“By who?””

He swallowed.

“Daniel.””

Claire whispered:

“I knew it.””

Mark nodded.

“He contacted me before Emily died.””

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to help uncover the truth.””

I laughed.

“And you believed him?””

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

“To save Emily.””

The room became quiet.

Mark continued.

“Daniel gave me information about the company. About Emily’s biological family. He made me think he was protecting her.””

“But he wasn’t.””

“No.””

“What happened?””

Mark looked at the locket.

“Daniel wanted the documents Emily found.””

“What documents?””

“The original research files.””

The older man interrupted.

“They proved Lily was the rightful heir.””

I looked at him.

“And you wanted them.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to keep them away from people who would destroy her.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting Lily.””

I looked around the room.

“But everyone keeps hurting her.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

I looked at Mark.

“What did you do?””

He reached into his pocket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“I recorded Daniel.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“He confessed.””

“To what?””

Mark pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

Daniel.

The same voice from the hospital.

“You don’t understand what Emily found.””

Mark’s younger voice answered:

“Then tell me.””

Daniel laughed.

“She found proof that the girl wasn’t just valuable because of the inheritance.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“She was valuable because she could expose everyone involved.””

The recording stopped.

I stared.

“Everyone?””

Mark nodded.

“That’s why Emily was scared.””

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily’s father spoke.

“Me.””

I turned.

He looked exhausted.

“I made mistakes.””

“You threatened her.””

“Yes.””

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why should I believe anything you say?””

“Because Emily left something for you.””

He pulled out a second envelope.

My name was written on it.

My heart sank.

Another letter.

Another secret.

I took it.

Inside was a single page.

Emily’s handwriting.

*David, if you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally found the truth.*

I kept reading.

*But there is one thing they don’t know.*

My fingers tightened.

*The person who started this entire nightmare was never Daniel.*

I looked up.

The room was silent.

I read the final line.

*It was the person who helped me create Lily’s protection plan.*

My eyes moved slowly.

Because beneath Emily’s words was a name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Claire gasp.

May you like

The name was:

*Mark.*
