Chapter 5: The Person Watching Us

I read the message five times.

Each time, it became more terrifying.

Not because of the threat.

Because of one word.

*Your wife.*

Not Emily.

Not “her.””

Your wife.

Whoever sent this knew exactly who I was.

Knew exactly what I was investigating.

I showed Claire.

The moment she saw it, she stepped backward.

“He knows.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Claire grabbed her coat.

“We need to leave.””

I stared at her.

“You’re serious?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if he knows you found the receipt, he knows I told you.””

“And?””

“He won’t stop.””

I looked at the woman who had destroyed my wedding plans less than twenty-four hours earlier.

Now she looked terrified.

Not manipulative.

Not angry.

Terrified.

I still didn’t trust her.

But I believed her fear.

“Where is Lily?”” Claire asked.

“At home.””

“With who?””

“My neighbor is watching her.””

“Call her.””

I immediately grabbed my phone.

The call connected after two rings.

“David?””

“Mrs. Wilson, is Lily okay?””

There was a pause.

A long one.

“David…”

My stomach dropped.

“What happened?””

“She’s fine.””

“Then why did you pause?””

“I didn’t want to scare you.””

I stood.

“Tell me.””

The older woman hesitated.

“Someone came by earlier.””

My grip tightened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did he want?””

“He said he was an old family friend.””

My heart started pounding.

“Did Lily talk to him?””

“No. I didn’t let him inside.””

“What did he look like?””

Mrs. Wilson went quiet.

“Gray hair. Tall. Expensive coat.””

Claire’s face changed.

She whispered, “Daniel.””

I heard Mrs. Wilson continue.

“He left something at the door.””

“What?””

“A package.””

“Did you open it?””

“No.””

I ended the call.

Claire looked at me.

“We need to go.””

This time, I didn’t argue.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at my house.

Lily ran toward me the second I opened the door.

“Daddy!””

I grabbed her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“Who was the man?””

I looked at Mrs. Wilson.

Then at Claire.

“Did he say anything?””

Lily frowned.

“He said something weird.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“He said Mommy’s story wasn’t finished.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Claire.

She looked like she might collapse.

“What package?”” I asked Mrs. Wilson.

She pointed.

It sat on the porch.

A plain brown box.

No name.

No address.

I stepped forward.

“Don’t touch it,” Claire said.

I stopped.

“What?””

“Daniel doesn’t send gifts.””

“Then what is it?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me more than anything.

I grabbed gloves from the kitchen and carefully opened the box.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

*You wanted the truth. Watch this.*

I looked at Claire.

“Do you know what’s on it?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I plugged it into my laptop.

A single video file appeared.

Created seven years ago.

The date was the week before Emily died.

I clicked play.

The screen showed a hospital room.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Emily’s room.

The camera angle was from the corner.

Someone had secretly recorded her.

Emily was lying in bed.

Pale.

Weak.

But alive.

Then another person entered the room.

A man.

I couldn’t see his face.

But I heard his voice.

And the moment I heard it, I knew.

I knew because I had heard that voice many times before.

At family dinners.

At holidays.

At Lily’s birthday parties.

Emily’s voice on the recording was shaking.

“Why are you doing this?””

The man replied:

“Because you were never supposed to find out.””

My blood turned cold.

Then the camera shifted.

The man stepped closer.

And his face appeared.

I stopped breathing.

Because the person standing beside my dying wife was someone I had trusted for seven years.

Someone who had held Lily’s hand.

Someone who had comforted me after Emily’s funeral.

Someone who had been part of our family.

Claire looked at the screen.

Then whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I couldn’t move.

The man in the video looked directly at Emily.

And said:

May you like

“You should have never searched for your real family.””

It was Emily’s father.
