Chapter 8: The Secret in the Toy Box

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

They searched the house.

They took fingerprints.

They asked questions.

But I already knew what they would say.

No witnesses.

No clear evidence.

No suspect.

People like Daniel didn’t leave behind mistakes.

They left fear.

After the officers left, I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee I never touched.

Lily sat across from me, holding her broken locket.

She looked so small.

Too small to be involved in any of this.

“Sweetheart,” I said gently.

She looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?””

“I need to ask you something.””

She nodded.

“Do you remember Mommy telling you anything special before she went to the hospital?””

Lily looked confused.

“Like what?””

“Anything.””

She squeezed the locket.

“She told me not to be scared.””

My heart hurt.

“Anything else?””

She looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“She told me there was a secret.””

Claire went still.

“What secret?”” she asked.

Lily looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“Did Mommy tell you where it was?””

Lily shook her head.

“She said I would know when I was older.””

I closed my eyes.

Emily.

Even at the end, she was protecting Lily.

“What else did she say?””

Lily thought.

“She said Daddy would find it.””

My breathing stopped.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“She said Daddy always finds things.””

I looked at Claire.

Neither of us spoke.

Because Emily had believed I would eventually uncover the truth.

She had planned for this.

I stood.

“Where did Mommy keep your things?””

Lily shrugged.

“My room.””

I followed her upstairs.

Her bedroom was filled with memories.

Drawings.

Stuffed animals.

Old pictures.

Things I had saved because I couldn’t let go.

Lily walked to her toy box.

“This?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

Nothing.

Just toys.

I almost laughed at myself.

“Maybe I’m wrong.””

Then Lily reached inside.

“Wait.””

She pulled out an old stuffed rabbit.

“This one.””

I stared.

A small white rabbit with one damaged ear.

Emily bought it before Lily was born.

“She always kept it near me,” Lily said.

I picked it up.

Something felt wrong.

The stuffing was uneven.

I turned it over.

The bottom seam had been stitched differently.

Recently.

I grabbed scissors.

Claire watched silently.

When I cut open the seam, a small plastic bag fell out.

Inside was a key.

And a folded letter.

My hands trembled before I opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Emily’s.

My eyes filled immediately.

*David,*

*If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you the truth myself.*

I stopped.

Claire covered her mouth.

I continued.

*I need you to trust your instincts. There are people who will pretend they loved me while destroying everything I built.*

My hands shook.

*The person who raised me was not my real father. I discovered the truth, and when I searched for my biological family, I found something I was never supposed to find.*

I looked at Claire.

She whispered:

“The company.””

I nodded.

The letter continued.

*My biological parents left evidence that someone stole from them. Someone close. Someone powerful.*

My chest tightened.

*Daniel is involved. But he is not the only one.*

I stopped reading.

Not the only one.

The room became silent.

Claire looked at me.

“Keep going.””

I swallowed.

*The person I trusted most is the person I fear the most.*

My hands went cold.

*David, if I am gone, do not confront anyone until you know everything. Protect Lily. Protect yourself.*

At the bottom was one final line.

*The key opens the place where the truth survived.*

I turned the key over.

A number was engraved into the metal.

417.

Mark appeared at the bedroom door.

“What did you find?””

I looked at him.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly, Emily’s warning made sense.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who could hurt us without raising suspicion.

I held up the key.

“Something she left behind.””

Mark stepped closer.

“What does it open?””

I looked at the number.

“Locker 417.””

Claire’s phone suddenly rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

“What?””

I stood.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she was staring at the name.

May you like

A name that made my stomach drop.

The call was from Emily’s number.
