Chapter 6: The Lie I Built My Life On

I closed the laptop.

Not because I didn’t want to see more.

Because I couldn’t.

My hands were shaking.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes had just witnessed.

Emily’s father.

The man who stood beside me at her funeral.

The man who cried while holding Lily.

The man who told me, “She was lucky to have you.””

He was in that hospital room.

Threatening her.

“What did you just say?”” I whispered.

Claire stared at me.

“Her father.””

“No.””

“I saw him.””

“No.””

I stood up so quickly the chair moved backward.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at the laptop.

“David…”

“No.””

I walked away.

“I knew Emily’s father.””

“Did you?””

The question stopped me.

I turned.

“What?””

Claire’s voice was soft.

“Did you know him?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

I knew the version of him that Emily allowed me to know.

But Emily had been hiding things.

Her adoption.

Her biological family.

Her fear.

I sat down.

“Play it.””

Claire looked surprised.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She opened the video again.

This time, we watched.

The hospital room appeared.

Emily looked smaller than I remembered.

Fragile.

But her eyes were sharp.

She wasn’t helpless.

She was angry.

“Dad, please,” Emily said in the video.

“Just tell me the truth.””

The man stood beside her.

“I raised you.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“You hid who I was.””

“I protected you.””

“You lied to me.””

The man’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“I know enough.””

“You found Daniel.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Claire.

She looked back at me.

Emily’s father continued.

“And now you think you can expose everything.””

Emily whispered:

“You ruined my life.””

The man stepped closer.

“Watch your words.””

“You took everything from me.””

“I gave you everything.””

“You stole it.””

My heart pounded.

Then Emily said something that made me grip the table.

“The documents are safe.””

The man froze.

“Where?””

“I’ll never tell you.””

The video ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just black screen.

Lily walked into the room.

“Daddy?””

I immediately closed the laptop.

She looked between us.

“Are you mad?””

I forced myself to smile.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Is Mommy’s necklace fixed?””

I looked at the locket.

The scratches.

The broken chain.

The memory of everything I had lost.

“I’m going to fix it.””

She smiled slightly.

“Mommy would like that.””

After Lily went upstairs, Claire spoke.

“She hid something.””

I nodded.

“The documents.””

“Yes.””

“What documents?””

Claire looked at me.

“I think they’re the reason Emily died.””

I stared at the laptop.

Seven years of my life suddenly felt like a carefully designed illusion.

“What do we do now?””

Claire took a breath.

“We find them before Daniel and your former father-in-law do.””

I looked at her.

“Former?””

She nodded.

“Because if that video is real…”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

A voice I hadn’t heard in seven years.

A voice from my wife’s funeral.

“David.””

I froze.

The voice continued.

“You should have left the past buried.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

Then:

“The man who knows what Emily hid.””

May you like

The call ended.

And on my laptop screen, the video file disappeared.
