Chapter 12: What Emily Hid Inside the Silver Heart

I drove home without saying a word.

Nobody spoke.

Not Claire.

Not Mark.

Not me.

The silence wasn’t peaceful.

It was the kind of silence that comes before something breaks.

Because now I knew.

Emily hadn’t left Lily a necklace.

She had left her a message.

A secret.

A protection.

When we arrived, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

She looked up.

“Daddy.””

I forced a smile.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She noticed the others.

“Is Mark staying for dinner?””

I looked at him.

Seven years.

Seven years of him being part of our lives.

How much of it was real?

“I don’t know,” I said.

Lily frowned.

“You look sad.””

I knelt beside her.

“I’m okay.””

She touched my face.

“You’re doing the thing you do when you’re lying.””

I almost smiled.

Emily used to say the same thing.

“She taught you that?””

Lily nodded.

“Mommy said you think you’re good at hiding feelings, but you’re not.””

My heart broke.

Even after all these years, Emily was still everywhere.

I looked at the locket on the table.

“Sweetheart, can I ask you something?””

“Okay.””

“Did Mommy ever tell you anything about this necklace?””

Lily touched it.

“She said it was special.””

“Why?””

“She said it held something important.””

I looked at Claire.

Then Mark.

Nobody moved.

“What did she mean?””

Lily shrugged.

“She said only Daddy would know when it was time.””

My breathing stopped.

Emily.

She had trusted me.

Even when I felt like I failed her.

I picked up the locket.

The scratches Claire made were still visible.

I examined the tiny metal heart carefully.

There was something different.

A small edge near the hinge.

Something I had never noticed.

I grabbed a magnifying glass from the drawer.

The back panel had a tiny gap.

“David?””

I didn’t answer.

I found a small tool and gently pressed the edge.

The metal clicked.

The back of the locket opened.

Inside was not a photo.

Not anymore.

A tiny folded piece of paper was hidden inside the silver casing.

Lily gasped.

“Mommy put that there?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Only a few words.

But they changed everything.

*The truth is not in the documents. The truth is in the blood.*

I looked at Mark.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Claire picked up the paper.

“Blood.””

Her eyes widened.

“Oh no.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The company.””

“What about it?””

“The inheritance wasn’t based on ownership.””

I stared.

“Then what was it based on?””

She whispered:

“DNA.””

The room went silent.

Mark looked toward Lily.

“Emily was trying to prove someone wasn’t who they claimed to be.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Before anyone answered, the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

I slowly stood.

“Who’s there?””

No response.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A man entered the living room.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

The same description Mrs. Wilson gave.

The man from the hospital video.

Emily’s father.

He looked at me.

Then at the locket in my hand.

And smiled.

“You finally found it.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who are you?””

He looked at Lily.

And his smile disappeared.

“My granddaughter.””

Lily moved closer to me.

I stepped in front of her.

“You stay away from my daughter.””

The man sighed.

“David, you have no idea what Emily did.””

I clenched my fists.

“You threatened my wife.””

“I tried to save her.””

“By destroying her?””

His expression hardened.

“Emily was about to make a mistake that would ruin all of you.””

“What mistake?””

He looked at the locket.

Then at Lily.

“She was going to reveal the truth about who Lily’s real father is.””

The room went completely silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What did you say?””

The man looked directly at me.

“Your daughter was born with a secret.””

I felt Lily’s hand grab mine.

The man took one step forward.

May you like

And whispered:

“Because Emily never told you the whole story about her pregnancy.””
