Chapter 16: The Wife Who Never Left

I forgot how to breathe.

That was the only way I could describe it.

My entire body stopped responding.

The woman standing in my doorway was impossible.

A ghost.

A memory.

A dream my mind had created because the truth was too painful to accept.

But she was standing there.

Real.

Alive.

Emily.

“David,” she whispered.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Then Lily screamed.

Not in fear.

In recognition.

“Mommy?””

Emily’s face collapsed.

She covered her mouth.

And then Lily ran.

I watched my daughter cross the room faster than I had ever seen her move.

Emily dropped to her knees.

Lily crashed into her arms.

For seven years, my daughter had carried the weight of losing her mother.

And now she was holding her.

The sound Emily made broke me.

A sob.

A sound filled with seven years of pain.

“I’m sorry,” Emily whispered into Lily’s hair.

“I’m so sorry.””

Lily cried.

“You’re real.””

Emily held her tighter.

“Yes, baby.””

“You came back.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you leave me?””

That question destroyed everyone in the room.

Emily closed her eyes.

“I never wanted to.””

I looked away.

Because I couldn’t watch.

Not yet.

Not when my own heart was breaking apart.

Mark stepped forward.

“Emily.””

She looked at him.

The expression on her face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“You kept your promise.””

Mark nodded.

“I tried.””

“You did more than that.””

Then she looked at Claire.

Claire looked like she had seen a miracle.

“I thought you were dead.””

Emily nodded.

“I know.””

“How?””

Emily looked at the locket in my hand.

“Because everyone was supposed to think that.””

I finally found my voice.

“Why?””

Everyone turned.

Emily looked at me.

And for the first time in seven years, I saw my wife’s eyes looking back at me.

“Because someone wanted me gone.””

My jaw tightened.

“Daniel?””

She shook her head.

“Not only Daniel.””

I looked around the room.

At every person who had carried secrets.

“Then tell me.””

Emily stood slowly.

Lily refused to let go of her hand.

“I will.””

She looked at the man who had claimed to be her father.

“You first.””

The older man lowered his eyes.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Emily’s voice was calm.

“You found me because you thought I still had the documents.””

He said nothing.

“You thought if I disappeared, nobody would find the evidence.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand everything now.””

Her voice hardened.

“You weren’t protecting me.””

The man looked away.

“I was trying to protect the family.””

Emily laughed sadly.

“No.””

She looked at Lily.

“You were protecting yourself.””

The room went silent.

I stepped closer.

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

“I need you to understand something.””

“Seven years.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Seven years, I thought I failed you.””

“You didn’t.””

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

“I raised our daughter thinking she would never hear your voice again.””

Emily looked at Lily.

“I know.””

Her tears fell.

“And every day I wanted to come home.””

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Emily took a deep breath.

“Because I wasn’t safe.””

The answer hurt.

“But Lily was.””

Emily nodded.

“Because of you.””

I looked at Mark.

He lowered his head.

“You all knew.””

Emily looked at him.

“I asked them to.””

I stared.

“You asked them?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel believed I was dead, he would stop searching.””

I shook my head.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

Emily looked at the locket.

“Because he didn’t know what I hid.””

She touched the silver heart.

“The proof.””

I looked at the necklace.

“What proof?””

Emily reached toward it.

“The proof that exposes everyone.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Everyone?””

Emily nodded.

“Daniel. My biological father. And the person who started this.””

The room froze.

“Who?””

Emily looked at me.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Someone you trusted completely.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the lights flickered.

Everyone looked toward the windows.

A car stopped outside.

Emily’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He found me.””

I stepped in front of Lily.

“Who?””

Emily whispered:

May you like

“Daniel.””

A second later, the front window shattered.
