Chapter 15: The Man Emily Trusted Most
I looked at Mark.
The room felt unreal.
Not because his name was there.
Because part of me had expected it.
The human mind does strange things when it’s desperate to survive.
It searches for reasons.
Excuses.
Anything that makes betrayal less painful.
“Say something,” I whispered.
Mark looked at the letter.
Then at me.
“I can explain.””
My stomach twisted.
“Of course you can.””
“David.””
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“Everyone in this house has used those words.””
Claire looked down.
The older man said nothing.
Because he knew.
Everyone had a story.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had hurt me while claiming they were saving me.
Mark stood.
“Emily asked me to help protect Lily.””
“Then why is your name in the letter?””
“Because she didn’t know if she could trust me.””
I laughed.
“Fair enough.””
His face fell.
“David.””
“You know what’s funny?””
“What?””
“I spent years thinking grief was the hardest thing I would ever survive.””
I looked at him.
“I was wrong.””
Mark’s eyes filled.
“It wasn’t my intention to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
The honesty stopped me.
Mark took a breath.
“I made one mistake.””
“One?””
“I trusted Daniel.””
The anger in me softened slightly.
Not enough.
But slightly.
“What did he make you do?””
Mark looked at Lily.
“I gave him information.””
My blood ran cold.
“What information?””
“About Emily.””
“What information?””
“Where she kept certain documents.””
I stepped back.
“You helped him find her secrets.””
“Yes.””
“Did you help him hurt her?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Almost desperately.
“No.””
I searched his face.
For the lie.
I didn’t find one.
Mark continued.
“When I realized what Daniel was doing, it was too late.””
“What happened?””
“Emily disappeared.””
I froze.
“Again with that word.””
Mark looked at me.
“Because that’s what happened.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I watched her die.””
Mark’s expression broke.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Mark swallowed.
“You watched a funeral.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Claire.
She looked just as shocked.
“What are you saying?””
Mark reached into the box.
He pulled out another photograph.
This one was older.
A hospital hallway.
A stretcher.
A woman covered with a blanket.
I looked away.
“I don’t understand.””
Mark whispered:
“Emily’s body was never identified.””
The room spun.
“What?””
“The hospital made mistakes.””
“No.””
“David…”
“No.””
I backed away.
“You’re telling me I buried a stranger?””
Mark didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I grabbed the table for support.
All these years.
All the pain.
All the memories.
Everything I believed.
Gone.
Claire whispered:
“Why didn’t anyone tell him?””
Mark looked at her.
“Because Emily asked us not to.””
I turned.
“She was alive?””
Mark’s eyes filled.
“For a short time.””
“Where is she?””
He looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
The words hurt.
But then something else hit me.
“If you don’t know…”
I stared at the locket.
“Who made the phone message?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the front door unlocked.
Everyone froze.
A key turning.
Slowly.
The door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Lily dropped her drawing.
The woman looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“David.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
I knew that face.
I knew those eyes.
Seven years of grief disappeared in one impossible second.
Emily stood in my doorway.
May you like
And behind her, she whispered:
“I’m sorry I let you believe I was gone.””
