Chapter 8: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

The world went quiet.

Not peaceful quiet.

The kind of quiet that comes before something breaks.

"That's impossible," Emily whispered.

Thomas was still on the phone.

"Mrs. Carter, I need you both to remain calm.""

I looked at Emily.

She looked just as shocked as I felt.

"You said Emily signed it?""

"Yes.""

Emily grabbed the phone from my hand.

"Mr. Reed, that's not possible. I never signed anything transferring my mother's property.""

Thomas answered calmly.

"Then we need to determine how your signature was obtained.""

Emily went pale.

She handed the phone back.

"How?""

Thomas explained.

"The document appears to be a preliminary agreement. It does not transfer ownership yet. But someone was preparing the paperwork.""

"Using my daughter's name.""

"Yes.""

I looked at Emily.

For the first time, I didn't see the person who betrayed me.

I saw someone who had also been manipulated.

But forgiveness was not the same as trust.

Not anymore.

"Thomas," I said, "what do we do?""

"First, we secure every legal document. Second, we determine who created these papers.""

"Can we find out?""

"We already started.""

That afternoon, Emily and I went through every document Daniel had left behind.

Every message.

Every email.

Every note.

It felt strange sitting beside my daughter.

For weeks, she had been the person I feared.

Now she was helping me uncover the truth.

But every few minutes, I remembered the dinner.

The kitchen.

The way she looked at me.

Pain does not disappear just because someone apologizes.

Emily noticed my silence.

"I know you don't trust me.""

I kept reading.

"No.""

She nodded.

"I deserve that.""

I looked at her.

"Why did you do it?""

Her eyes filled.

"I thought I was saving my family.""

"By hurting me?""

"I thought you would understand eventually.""

I shook my head.

"That was the problem. You decided what I needed without asking me.""

She wiped her tears.

"I was scared.""

"So was I.""

She looked at me.

"Of me?""

I answered honestly.

"Yes.""

The words hurt both of us.

But they were true.

That evening, Thomas called again.

"Mrs. Carter, we found the source.""

I sat up.

"Who?""

"Daniel.""

I wasn't surprised.

But then he continued.

"However, there is something unusual.""

"What?""

"The document was created six months ago.""

I frowned.

"Six months?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Emily.

She looked confused.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"Why?""

"Because six months ago, Daniel wasn't having money problems.""

I felt a chill.

"Then why prepare everything?""

Thomas was quiet.

"Because it appears this plan started long before the financial issues.""

I leaned back.

"What does that mean?""

"It means the money problems may have been an excuse.""

I looked at the papers scattered across the table.

The fake signatures.

The hidden accounts.

The medical authorization.

The dinner humiliation.

None of it was random.

It was a plan.

A carefully built plan.

But why?

Why would someone go so far?

Emily suddenly grabbed one of the papers.

"Wait.""

"What?""

She pointed to the bottom.

"Look at this.""

I leaned closer.

There was a small notation in the corner.

A reference number.

Thomas recognized it immediately.

"That code belongs to a trust document.""

"A trust?""

"Yes.""

"Whose trust?""

The silence on the phone lasted only a second.

But it felt much longer.

Then Thomas said:

"Your late husband's.""

My heart stopped.

"Richard's trust?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Emily.

Neither of us spoke.

Because there was only one reason someone would go after my property using my husband's trust.

They weren't just trying to take my house.

They were trying to take something Richard left behind.

Something he wanted protected.

May you like

Something he never told anyone about.

Not even me.
