Chapter 4: The Authorization She Hid
I held the phone so tightly my fingers started to ache.
"Medical authorization?"" I repeated.
The words sounded foreign.
Cold.
Official.
The kind of words you heard in hospitals, not from your own daughter.
Emily looked toward the door.
For a moment, I thought she might leave.
But she stayed.
That told me something.
She wasn't shocked that Thomas knew.
She was shocked that I knew.
"Thomas," I said slowly, "please explain.""
There was a silence on the line.
Then my attorney spoke carefully.
"Mrs. Carter, the paperwork Emily prepared included a request for authority over healthcare decisions. It appears she was attempting to establish herself as someone who could make medical decisions on your behalf if you became unable to do so.""
I looked at Emily.
"Without telling me?""
She swallowed.
"Mom, you are misunderstanding.""
"Am I?""
I held up the papers.
"Did you or did you not prepare documents giving yourself control over my finances and medical choices?""
Her eyes filled with frustration.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"Stop saying that.""
My voice cracked through the room.
"Protection doesn't happen in secret.""
Emily flinched.
It was the first time my words reached her.
Maybe because I wasn't crying.
Maybe because I wasn't begging.
Maybe because she realized the mother who always forgave her was no longer standing there.
Thomas continued.
"Mrs. Carter, I recommend you do not sign anything else until we review all documents carefully.""
"I understand.""
I ended the call.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Emily sat across from me.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, she whispered, "You think I'm a monster.""
I looked at her.
"No.""
She seemed surprised.
"I think you made choices that hurt me.""
Her eyes dropped.
"You don't understand what it's like watching your mother get older.""
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
"You mean watching me live?""
"That's not what I meant.""
"Emily, I am sixty-eight years old. I still drive. I manage my home.
I pay my bills. I volunteer twice a week.""
"I know.""
"Then why were you acting like I was already incapable?""
She didn't answer.
I leaned back in my chair.
"Who helped you prepare these?""
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
"Nobody.""
"Emily.""
She looked away.
That was the answer.
"Was it Daniel?""
Her silence confirmed it.
I closed my eyes.
The man who sat at my table.
The man who watched me walk away.
The man who never once asked if I was okay.
I remembered a conversation from six months earlier.
Daniel had been standing in my kitchen while Emily was outside with Noah.
"Mrs. Carter," he said, looking around.
I smiled.
"Please, call me Mom.""
He smiled back.
"Of course.""
Then he looked at the walls.
"This house must mean a lot to you.""
"It does.""
"You know, maintaining a place this big can become difficult.""
"I manage.""
"I know. I just mean eventually.""
Eventually.
That word had bothered me.
But I ignored it.
I always gave people the benefit of the doubt.
Maybe too much.
Emily stood up.
"Mom, I need you to listen to me.""
I looked at her.
"I am listening.""
"Daniel and I have been worried.""
"Worried enough to create documents behind my back?""
She rubbed her forehead.
"You don't know everything.""
"Then tell me.""
Again, silence.
I waited.
A mother always waits.
Even when she shouldn't.
Finally, Emily whispered, "There were bills.""
"What bills?""
She looked ashamed.
"Daniel lost some money.""
My stomach tightened.
"How much?""
She didn't answer.
"How much, Emily?""
"More than we could handle.""
The room went quiet.
And suddenly everything made sense.
The questions about my accounts.
The sudden concern about my future.
The dinner.
The humiliation.
Maybe making me feel small was easier than admitting she needed something from me.
I stood up.
"You didn't want me at the table because you were embarrassed by me.""
"No.""
"You wanted me out of sight.""
"Mom—"
"Because it was easier to ask for my help if you stopped seeing me as your mother.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
But I couldn't let them erase what happened.
Not this time.
She reached for my hand.
"Please.""
I stepped back.
"I need time.""
She looked devastated.
But then her phone rang.
She checked the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
"Who is it?"" I asked.
She didn't answer.
The phone kept vibrating.
Finally, she picked up.
"Daniel?""
She listened.
Then her face turned pale.
"What do you mean the account is frozen?""
I watched her carefully.
And I realized something.
The person who had been controlling the situation wasn't Emily.
She was only following someone else's plan.

And whoever Daniel really was…
He was about to make his next move.
