Chapter 12: The Truth Behind Richard’s Warning

Mark opened the door before I knocked.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He was expecting me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The man standing in front of me looked older.

Tired.

Not like the brother I remembered.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

"Come in," he said quietly.

I stepped inside.

The house looked exactly the same.

Family photos.

Old furniture.

Memories everywhere.

That almost made it worse.

Because betrayal always hurts more when it happens in familiar places.

"Did you know Daniel before Emily married him?""

Mark didn't pretend.

He just closed the door.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"How long?""

"Ten years.""

"Why?""

He looked away.

"Richard asked me to help him investigate something.""

I froze.

"Investigate what?""

"Daniel.""

I stared at him.

"Richard knew?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did he let Emily marry him?""

Mark sat down.

"Because Richard didn't have enough proof.""

I felt anger rising.

"So everyone knew except me?""

Mark looked ashamed.

"Not everyone.""

"Enough people.""

He nodded.

"I should have told you.""

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

I walked around the room.

"Then explain everything.""

Mark took a deep breath.

"Daniel approached Richard years ago. He wanted access to certain investments. He was charming.

Smart. He knew exactly what to say.""

"And Richard noticed.""

"Immediately.""

"Then why was Daniel still around?""

"Because Richard wanted to know what he was planning.""

I looked at him.

"And you helped.""

"Yes.""

"How?""

Mark rubbed his face.

"I watched him.""

"And?""

"He wasn't just interested in money.""

I waited.

"He was interested in control.""

The room felt colder.

Mark continued.

"Richard believed Daniel looked for vulnerable families. People with assets. People who trusted easily.""

I swallowed.

"Like us.""

Mark looked at the floor.

"Yes.""

A painful silence followed.

Then I asked:

"Why did you work with him?""

Mark closed his eyes.

"Because I got greedy.""

There it was.

The truth.

Simple.

Ugly.

"I made bad investments. I owed money. Daniel offered help.""

"What kind of help?""

"He said if I gave him information, he could fix my problems.""

My heart sank.

"You gave him information about me.""

"Not at first.""

"But eventually.""

He nodded.

"I told myself I was only giving him harmless details.""

"What details?""

"Your property value. Your accounts. Richard's trust.""

I felt like I had been punched.

"My life became your solution.""

"No.""

His eyes filled.

"I never wanted to hurt you.""

"But you did.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

For once, I believed someone knew.

Mark reached into a drawer.

He pulled out a folder.

"I kept copies.""

I didn't touch it.

"What is that?""

"Everything Daniel planned.""

"Why?""

"Because I realized too late that I wasn't his partner.""

He looked at me.

"I was his tool.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were emails.

Messages.

Financial records.

Then I saw something.

A document dated two months before the Sunday dinner.

My name was on it.

I read the title.

*Family Intervention Plan.*

"What is this?""

Mark looked terrified.

"Don't read that.""

Too late.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

The goal is to convince Mrs. Carter she is no longer capable of independent decisions.

I turned the page.

The next line was worse.

Emotional pressure will be applied through family relationships.

I looked at Mark.

"How long?""

His voice broke.

"I don't know.""

"How long have they been planning to break me?""

Mark didn't answer.

Because he didn't have to.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Thomas.

One sentence.

*Mrs. Carter, you need to leave immediately. Daniel knows you found the documents.*

I looked up.

Mark saw my face.

"What happened?""

I showed him the message.

His expression changed.

Because he knew something I didn't.

"What?""

He stood up.

"Daniel doesn't send warnings.""

My heart started racing.

"Then why did he send one?""

Mark looked toward the window.

May you like

And whispered:

"Because he wants you to know he's coming.""
