Chapter 13: The Day He Came Knocking
I left Mark’s house with the folder pressed against my chest.
Not because I was afraid someone would take it.
Because I was afraid of what was inside.
Every page felt like another piece of my family disappearing.
The drive home was quiet.
Emily sat beside me, staring out the window.
Neither of us spoke.
There was nothing to say.
How could two people repair a relationship after discovering they had both been used?
The daughter who betrayed me.
The mother who no longer knew how to trust her.
When we arrived home, Thomas was already waiting.
He stood near the front door, holding his phone.
"You got my message?""
I nodded.
"Why did Daniel send a warning?""
Thomas looked at Emily.
"Because he wants you frightened.""
"That's all?""
"No.""
He looked at the folder in my hands.
"He wants you to make a mistake.""
I walked inside.
"What kind of mistake?""
"An emotional one.""
I placed the folder on the table.
"Explain.""
Thomas sat down.
"People like Daniel don't always win by force. They win when someone becomes desperate. Angry. Confused.""
I looked at the documents.
"He wants me to react.""
"Exactly.""
Emily sat quietly.
Then she spoke.
"He knows we found everything.""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
"How?""
"Someone told him.""
The room went silent.
My eyes moved toward Emily.
She immediately understood.
"You think I told him?""
I didn't answer quickly enough.
Her face changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
"Mom.""
I looked away.
"I don't know who to trust anymore.""
She nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
That was the hardest part.
She didn't defend herself.
She accepted the doubt.
A few minutes later, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Thomas looked at me.
"Don't answer.""
But I did.
"Hello?""
A familiar voice came through.
Daniel.
"Mrs. Carter.""
I said nothing.
"I think we need to talk.""
"You have a strange way of starting conversations.""
A small laugh.
"You're angry.""
"Shouldn't I be?""
"You think I betrayed you.""
"I know you did.""
Silence.
Then he said something unexpected.
"I never wanted this to become ugly.""
I almost laughed.
"Ugly?""
I looked at the folder.
"You created fake documents. You tried to control my finances. You used my daughter.""
"I helped your daughter.""
"No.""
My voice became steady.
"You manipulated her.""
Daniel sighed.
"You always saw Emily as innocent.""
"Because she is my daughter.""
"And that's exactly why I knew she would be useful.""
The words hung there.
For a second, even Daniel seemed to realize he had said too much.
"Thank you," I said quietly.
"For what?""
"For finally telling me the truth.""
He became silent.
Then his voice hardened.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with.""
"Maybe not.""
I looked at Thomas.
"But I understand enough.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"You have no idea what Richard left behind.""
My heart skipped.
"Don't mention my husband.""
"I'm just saying he had secrets.""
"You mean secrets you wanted.""
A pause.
Then:
"Richard was not the man you think he was.""
I felt anger rise.
"You don't get to talk about him.""
"Ask yourself why he hid things from you.""
The line went silent.
Then he hung up.
I stared at the phone.
Thomas immediately asked, "What did he say?""
I told him.
When I repeated Daniel's final words, Thomas looked concerned.
"That was deliberate.""
"What?""
"He wanted you questioning Richard.""
"Why?""
"Because doubt makes people easier to control.""
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Daniel's words kept returning.
Richard had secrets.
I hated that a stranger could make me question the person I loved most.
But there was one thing I knew.
Richard never tried to control me.
He protected me.
There was a difference.
At 2:13 in the morning, I heard a sound outside.
A car door closing.
I got out of bed.
The house was dark.
I walked toward the window.
A figure stood near the driveway.
My heart raced.
Then the person stepped into the light.
Emily gasped behind me.
"Mom...""
I turned.
She was staring outside.
Because she recognized him.
It wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Mark.
It was someone we never expected.
Someone who had been missing from this entire story.
Someone who knew Richard better than anyone.
May you like
And he was standing outside my house.
Holding a document.
