Chapter 16: The Secret Thomas Kept

The room felt different after Patricia’s call.

Before, I thought I was searching for the person who betrayed me.

Now I wondered if I had been sitting beside one the entire time.

Thomas looked at the floor.

That alone told me everything.

A person with nothing to hide would have been angry.

Confused.

Defensive.

But Thomas looked like someone who had just been caught carrying a weight he had been holding for years.

"Thomas," I said quietly.

He didn't answer.

"Look at me.""

Slowly, he raised his eyes.

And I saw regret.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

The pain of someone who knew he had failed.

"How long?"" I asked.

Emily looked between us.

"Mom, what is he talking about?""

Thomas sat down.

"I should have told you.""

I felt my heart tighten.

"That is not an answer.""

He nodded.

"You're right.""

He took a deep breath.

"Richard asked me to keep something from you.""

"What?""

"Something about Daniel.""

I stared.

"Another secret?""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The word landed harder than I expected.

After everything.

After all the lies.

I thought there couldn't be another one.

I was wrong.

"What did Richard know?""

Thomas folded his hands.

"Before Emily met Daniel, Richard discovered Daniel had attempted to access information about your family.""

"How?""

"Through business contacts.""

"And?""

"He confronted him.""

I looked at the documents.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because Richard believed telling you would put you in danger.""

I almost laughed.

"In danger?""

"Yes.""

"Thomas, I was married to that man.""

"I know.""

"Daniel became my son-in-law.""

Thomas looked devastated.

"I know.""

I stood.

"Then explain to me why everyone decided I couldn't handle the truth.""

Nobody spoke.

That was the real betrayal.

Not just what they did.

The fact that they all made decisions for me.

They protected me by taking away my right to know.

Emily quietly said, "Mom...""

I looked at her.

"Do you understand now?""

She nodded.

"I do.""

Her voice cracked.

"We all thought we were helping.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You were controlling.""

The word hurt.

But it was true.

Thomas looked at me.

"Richard wanted to tell you.""

"Then why didn't he?""

"Because he was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"That you would forgive Daniel.""

I froze.

Because that sounded like me.

I hated that it sounded like me.

Thomas continued.

"Richard knew your heart. He knew you always searched for the good in people.""

I whispered:

"He knew me.""

"Yes.""

"And he still didn't trust me with the truth.""

Thomas looked down.

"He trusted you. He didn't trust Daniel.""

The silence afterward was painful.

Then Thomas reached into his briefcase.

He removed a sealed envelope.

"This was supposed to be given to you only if Daniel's actions were discovered.""

I stared at it.

Another envelope.

Another hidden message.

Another piece of a life I thought I understood.

"From Richard?""

Thomas nodded.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

My love,

If this letter reaches you, I imagine you are angry.

I almost smiled.

Of course he knew.

You will wonder why I kept things from you. You will wonder why I made choices without telling you.

I need you to understand something.

I was wrong to protect you by keeping you unaware.

My eyes filled.

The honesty broke me.

You deserved the truth. You always did.

I continued reading.

Daniel is dangerous because he does not force people. He convinces them.

He makes people believe his ideas are their own.

I looked at Emily.

She wiped her tears.

The letter continued.

But there is something important you need to know.

Daniel was not the first person who tried to reach what we built.

I stopped.

The words felt familiar.

Patricia had said the same thing.

The first betrayal came from someone I trusted.

My breathing changed.

I read the final paragraph.

If you discover the truth, do not focus only on those who hurt you.

Focus on those who stayed.

Because the hardest part of betrayal is not losing people.

It is discovering who was never truly there.

I lowered the letter.

"Who was the first betrayal?""

Thomas looked at me.

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

One sentence.

*Ask Thomas who really introduced me to your family.*

I looked up.

Because suddenly I understood.

Daniel didn't enter our lives by accident.

May you like

Someone opened the door.

And I was about to learn who.
