Chapter 3: The Secret in the Envelope
The room felt smaller after Thomas's words.
Emily stood across from me, frozen.
Her anger was gone.
The confidence she walked in with had disappeared the moment she realized she wasn't the only person who had been making plans.
I held the phone tighter.
"Who else signed them, Thomas?""
There was a pause.
"Your daughter's husband.""
I looked at Daniel's signature on the documents.
The same man who sat at my dinner table the night before.
The same man who watched me leave without saying a word.
Emily noticed my expression.
"What did he say?""
I didn't answer immediately.
Because I needed to hear the truth myself.
Thomas continued.
"Your son-in-law signed as a witness on several forms. There are also notes suggesting they intended to discuss transferring property management.""
My eyes moved to Emily.
"Property management?""
She looked away.
"Mom...""
"No.""
My voice surprised even me.
"No excuses. Not this time.""
She took a step forward.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence told me everything.
For years, I had defended Emily.
When relatives complained she was selfish, I said she was stressed.
When friends warned me she only called when she needed something, I said she was busy.
I had spent so much time protecting my daughter's image that I ignored the way she was treating me.
I placed the phone on speaker.
"Thomas, stay on the line.""
"Of course.""
Emily looked nervous.
"Mom, you don't need a lawyer involved in a family matter.""
I picked up the cream envelope.
"Funny. You didn't seem to think family mattered when you prepared legal documents behind my back.""
Her eyes dropped to the envelope.
"What is that?""
I sat down slowly.
"Something your father and I prepared years ago.""
She stared.
"Before Dad died?""
"Yes.""
Emily's expression softened for a second.
A memory passed between us.
Her father loved surprises.
He used to hide birthday cards around the house and leave clues for her to find them.
But this wasn't a birthday surprise.
This was something much bigger.
"When your father became sick," I said, "we updated our estate plans.""
Emily sat down.
"What does that mean?""
"It means everything was arranged carefully.""
She looked relieved.
"Okay. So why are you acting like this is some kind of threat?""
I looked at her.
"Because you still don't understand.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were several documents.
The first page had my husband's handwriting.
Emily recognized it immediately.
"That's Dad's writing.""
"Yes.""
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she stopped.
The color drained from her face.
"What is this?""
I folded my hands.
"Read it.""
She read silently for several seconds.
Then she looked up.
"No.""
The word came out like a whisper.
Daniel had always been good at appearing harmless.
He was polite.
Quiet.
Always smiling.
But there were moments when I noticed something different.
The way he asked about my house.
The way he questioned my investments.
The way he once joked, "Your house would be perfect for someone younger someday.""
I had ignored those moments.
Until now.
Emily held the document.
"Mom, why didn't you tell me about this?""
"Because I wanted to believe I never needed to.""
Her eyes filled with frustration.
"So you were testing me?""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I was hoping I was wrong.""
She looked down.
For the first time, she looked less like an angry daughter and more like someone realizing she had made a terrible mistake.
But then her phone buzzed.
She glanced at it.
A message appeared on the screen.
I saw only a few words.
*Did she find out about the second account?*
Emily immediately locked her phone.
Too late.
I had seen enough.
"Second account?""
She stood quickly.
"Mom, it's not what you think.""
I slowly reached for the document folder.
"Then tell me what it is.""
She didn't answer.
Her silence was louder than any confession.
I looked at my daughter and realized the betrayal was deeper than I imagined.
This wasn't just about my money.
This wasn't just about my house.
Someone had been planning something much bigger.
Thomas spoke quietly through the phone.
"Mrs. Carter, there is one more thing you should know.""
I looked at Emily.
"What?""
His next sentence made my entire body go cold.
"The documents your daughter prepared weren't only about controlling your finances.""
I held my breath.
"They were also connected to a medical authorization request.""
Emily's face went white.
And for the first time, she looked afraid.
May you like
Because she knew what Thomas was about to reveal.
And she knew I would never see her the same way again.
