Chapter 11: The Conversation No One Wanted Me to Hear

The photograph stayed on my table all night.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

Daniel.

Standing near Richard.

Years before Emily ever married him.

Years before he became part of our family.

Years before I trusted him.

"How did he know Dad?"" I asked.

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"But you recognize that moment.""

She looked uncomfortable.

"I remember something.""

I waited.

"When I was younger, Dad had a meeting at the house.""

"What kind of meeting?""

"I don't know. I was seventeen.""

She stared at the picture.

"But I remember seeing Daniel.""

I felt a chill.

"Emily, Daniel wasn't in our family.""

"I know.""

"Then why was he there?""

She looked at me.

"I thought he was one of Dad's business contacts.""

I sat down slowly.

Richard.

The trust.

Daniel.

Mark.

Everything was connected.

Thomas arrived an hour later.

When I showed him the photograph, his expression changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"Someone sent it.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

He studied it carefully.

"This is important.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel knowing about the trust years ago changes everything.""

Emily crossed her arms.

"So he planned this for years?""

Thomas didn't answer.

But his silence was enough.

That afternoon, Thomas helped us access old records.

Business contacts.

Trust documents.

Meeting notes.

Then we found something.

A visitor log from Richard's office.

The date was ten years earlier.

The name listed:

Daniel Whitmore.

I stared.

"He met with my husband?""

Thomas nodded.

"What about?""

We searched deeper.

The meeting notes were incomplete.

Only one sentence remained.

Discussed potential partnership and family protection strategy.

I frowned.

"Family protection strategy?""

Emily looked confused.

"What does that mean?""

Thomas leaned closer.

"It means Daniel knew about your family situation.""

"How?""

We kept searching.

Then another document appeared.

A payment record.

From Richard.

To Daniel.

I felt sick.

"Richard paid him?""

Thomas read the information.

"Yes.""

"For what?""

We opened the attachment.

It was a consulting agreement.

The date was ten years ago.

And the purpose was listed:

*Estate planning review.*

I looked at Emily.

Her face had gone pale.

"Mom...""

I whispered.

"My husband knew him.""

But the question remained.

Why?

That night, I opened Richard's old desk drawer.

I had avoided it since he died.

Too many memories.

Too much pain.

But now I needed answers.

Inside, beneath old documents, I found a small black notebook.

I opened it.

The first pages were normal.

Then I found Daniel's name.

My hands began shaking.

Richard had written notes.

Not many.

But enough.

Daniel Whitmore is intelligent but ambitious.

I turned the page.

Do not underestimate him.

Another page.

He believes money creates power.

My heart raced.

Richard knew.

He had known exactly what kind of person Daniel was.

Then I reached the final note.

The one that made me stop breathing.

If Daniel ever enters our family, the truth must be revealed.

I stared at the words.

Entered our family.

Richard had written this before Emily married him.

Before any of us knew.

"Mom?""

Emily stood in the doorway.

She saw the notebook.

"What is it?""

I looked at her.

"Your father knew Daniel.""

She walked closer.

"What?""

"He warned us.""

Her face changed.

"Why didn't he tell us?""

I turned the page.

There was no answer.

Only a final line.

A line written differently.

As if Richard had added it later.

Mark knows the reason.

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Emily.

Then at the notebook.

Then at the phone.

Because there was only one person who could answer the question.

My brother.

May you like

And this time, I wasn't calling him.

I was going to his house.
