Chapter 14: The Witness Richard Left Behind

The man standing outside my house didn't move.

He just waited.

Like he knew I needed time to process what I was seeing.

Emily whispered his name.

"Victor.""

I looked at her.

"You know him?""

She nodded slowly.

"Only from Daniel's messages.""

My stomach tightened.

Victor Hale.

The name from the email.

The person Daniel had been communicating with.

The person connected to the plan.

Thomas immediately stood.

"Stay here.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"I need answers.""

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

We stepped outside together.

The night air was cold.

Victor looked older than I expected.

He wasn't threatening.

He looked exhausted.

Like someone who had spent years carrying guilt.

"Mrs. Carter.""

I stared at him.

"Why are you here?""

He held up the document.

"Because you need to see this before Daniel gets to you.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"How do we know this isn't another trick?""

Victor looked at him.

"You don't.""

The honesty surprised me.

Then he looked at me.

"But Richard trusted me.""

That name changed everything.

I took the document.

"What is it?""

"A copy of the original agreement between Richard and Daniel.""

I looked down.

The first page had both names.

My hands shook.

"Why would Richard make an agreement with him?""

"Because Richard was trying to expose him.""

Victor looked toward the house.

"Can we talk inside?""

We sat around my kitchen table.

The same table where my daughter had discovered my trust.

The same table where my family secrets had unfolded.

Victor placed a folder down.

"Daniel wasn't interested in your money when he first met Richard.""

"What was he interested in?""

"Access.""

"To what?""

"Information.""

Thomas frowned.

"Information about wealthy families.""

Victor nodded.

"Daniel studied people. He found their weaknesses.""

Emily looked sick.

"So my marriage...""

Victor looked at her.

"I am sorry.""

She swallowed.

"He chose me.""

"Yes.""

The answer hurt.

But it was honest.

Victor continued.

"Richard discovered Daniel had done this before.""

"How many times?""

"Several.""

I felt cold.

"He destroyed families?""

"Not always.""

Victor opened another file.

"Sometimes he convinced people to hand over control voluntarily.""

I looked at the documents.

"He makes them believe they need him.""

Victor nodded.

"Exactly.""

Emily whispered:

"That's what he did to me.""

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

Victor looked at me.

"Richard wanted to protect you.""

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

Victor was quiet.

Finally:

"Because he knew you.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"He knew you would forgive Emily.""

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

"He was afraid your love would make you vulnerable.""

I looked down.

Richard had known me better than anyone.

Victor continued.

"There is one more thing.""

"What?""

He pushed another document toward me.

"This is the final condition of the trust.""

I read it.

Then stopped.

My hands went cold.

"What is this?""

Thomas leaned closer.

His expression changed.

"Mrs. Carter...""

"What?""

He looked at me.

"Your husband didn't just protect the assets.""

I stared at the page.

The final condition was written clearly.

If anyone attempted to manipulate ownership of the property through deception, the trust would activate a legal review.

But there was one additional clause.

One that changed everything.

I read it aloud.

"If a family member participates in the attempted fraud, their inheritance rights will be permanently removed.""

The room went silent.

Emily covered her mouth.

Because she understood.

This wasn't just about Daniel.

It wasn't just about Mark.

It was about everyone involved.

Victor stood.

"There is something else you need to know.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"Daniel knows about this clause.""

"How?""

Victor's face became serious.

"Because someone told him.""

My heart sank.

"Who?""

Victor looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

"The same person who has been helping him from the beginning.""

I waited.

May you like

And when he finally said the name, I felt the last piece of the puzzle fall into place.

"It was someone inside your family.""
