Chapter 6: The Family He Tried to Break

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

For years, I had worried about disappointing my daughter.

I had worried about being too strict.

Too distant.

Too independent.

I never once imagined I would need to protect myself from the people closest to me.

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

The house was quiet.

Normally, quiet mornings made me think of loneliness.

That morning, they felt like freedom.

I made coffee.

Opened the curtains.

And sat at the same kitchen table where I had discovered my daughter's betrayal.

But this time, I wasn't shaking.

I was planning.

At nine o'clock, Thomas called.

"Mrs. Carter, we received another filing request.""

"From who?""

"Daniel.""

I closed my eyes.

"What kind of request?""

"He is attempting to challenge your ability to manage your own affairs.""

The coffee cup stopped halfway to my mouth.

"He is saying I'm incapable?""

"Yes.""

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

"The man who couldn't manage his own finances is questioning mine?""

Thomas sighed.

"Unfortunately, this happens more often than people think.""

"What do we do?""

"We prepare.""

That afternoon, I met with doctors who had known me for years.

My physician laughed when I explained why I was there.

"Mrs. Carter, if anyone questions your independence, I would be happy to provide records showing you're one of my most organized patients.""

I smiled.

For the first time in weeks, someone was standing beside me.

Not because they felt sorry for me.

Because they respected me.

When I returned home, I found Emily sitting on my porch.

She looked exhausted.

Her makeup was gone.

Her confidence was gone.

She looked like the little girl who used to wait for me after school.

I stopped at the gate.

"What are you doing here?""

She stood.

"Mom, please.""

I didn't move.

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

She nodded.

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

She looked down.

"Yes.""

For once, she didn't argue.

"I was wrong.""

The words surprised me.

"I thought I was helping. I thought if I handled everything, I could fix our problems.""

"And what happened?""

"I made everything worse.""

I looked at her.

"Yes.""

She wiped her eyes.

"I don't expect you to forgive me.""

That was the first thing she said that sounded like my daughter.

Not someone defending herself.

Someone admitting pain.

I opened the gate.

"Come inside.""

We sat in silence for several minutes.

Then Emily said something I wasn't prepared for.

"Daniel wasn't just trying to get your money.""

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small envelope.

Not cream-colored.

White.

Plain.

"I found this in his office.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What is it?""

"I don't know.""

She handed it to me.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender was Daniel.

The recipient was someone named Victor Hale.

The message was short.

*Once the mother is removed from control, the property transfer can proceed.*

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

"Property transfer?""

Emily nodded.

"There was more.""

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a photograph.

It showed Daniel standing outside my house.

With someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

My hands went cold.

Because the person standing beside Daniel was not a stranger.

It was someone from my own family.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

May you like

Three words.

*The real plan.*
