Chapter 5: The Plan Behind The Smile
The words echoed through the garden.
“She planned to make sure Nia could never come back to you.””
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.
Because some things are so cruel your mind refuses to accept them.
I looked at Vanessa.
“No.””
She immediately shook her head.
“Daniel, he’s lying.””
But her voice was different now.
Desperate.
Not confident.
Mark handed me the final document.
“This is a proposal from a private family attorney.””
I opened it.
The title was enough to make my stomach drop.
*Guardianship Modification Strategy.*
I read the first paragraph.
The words blurred.
Vanessa had been researching ways to prove that I was “emotionally unavailable” as a parent.
She wanted evidence that my work schedule affected Nia.
She wanted statements from people claiming Nia was “difficult.””
She wanted to build a case.
A case to take my daughter away.
I looked up slowly.
“Is this real?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“It wasn’t finalized.””
I stared at her.
That was her defense.
Not “I didn’t do it.””
Just “I didn’t finish.””
“You were going to take my daughter from me.””
“No.””
“You were.””
She stepped closer.
“I was trying to solve a problem.””
I actually laughed.
A quiet, broken laugh.
“My daughter is not a problem.””
“She was making everything harder.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
She said it out loud.
Nia was standing only a few feet away.
She heard it.
Her face changed.
That hurt more than anything.
Because children remember words adults wish they could take back.
“Nia…”
I started walking toward her.
But she stepped back.
Not from me.
From Vanessa.
“Why don’t you like me?””
Her voice was tiny.
Vanessa froze.
The crowd around us disappeared.
It was just a twelve-year-old girl asking the woman who promised to love her why she had never been enough.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“I do like you.””
Nia shook her head.
“No, you don’t.””
The honesty in that sentence destroyed the last excuse Vanessa had.
“I tried,” Vanessa whispered.
Nia wiped her face.
“You tried to make Dad send me away.””
“No.””
“You told me I wouldn’t belong after the wedding.””
Vanessa looked away.
Nia nodded slowly.
“I knew it.””
I walked over and placed my arm around my daughter.
“She doesn’t get to decide where you belong.””
Nia leaned against me.
For years, I had worried about finding someone who would love me again.
I never realized I should have been worried about finding someone who would love the person I loved most.
Vanessa suddenly turned toward the guests.
“You’re all judging me, but nobody understands what it’s like.””
Nobody answered.
She looked at me.
“You had no idea how hard it was being second.””
“Second?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“Your daughter always came first.””
I stared at her.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised her.
“Yes, Vanessa. She always will.””
A painful silence followed.
“I hoped after we got married, things would change.””
“They did.””
She looked confused.
“How?””
“Because now I know the truth.””
She looked down.
For a second, I thought she might finally apologize.
Instead, she whispered:
“You’ll regret this.””
I felt a chill.
“What did you say?””
She lifted her eyes.
“You’re throwing away the woman who loved you because of one mistake.””
“One mistake?””
She smiled faintly.
Not sadly.
Not regretfully.
Almost like she still believed she was right.
“You’ll come back.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You think you know everything.””
“I know enough.””
She turned away.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
The color drained from her face.
She answered quietly.
“Hello?””
Everyone watched as she listened.
Then her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What do you mean the account was frozen?””
My eyes narrowed.
Account?
She looked toward me.
Then quickly walked away from the crowd.
Mark watched her.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen yet.””
I looked at him.
“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Vanessa wasn’t just planning your marriage.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else was she planning?””
Mark looked toward the parking lot.
“She had someone else helping her.””
A black SUV slowly entered the venue.
The driver’s door opened.
May you like
And the person who stepped out made Vanessa completely panic.
Because it was the one person she never expected to see.
