Chapter 4: The Envelope That Changed Everything

Mark Reynolds stopped a few feet away from me.

The entire wedding venue seemed to hold its breath.

The man who had been a stranger ten minutes ago was now standing in front of me with an envelope that apparently contained the truth about the woman I was supposed to marry.

Vanessa stepped forward immediately.

“Mark, leave.””

Her voice wasn’t scared.

It was angry.

A cold, sharp kind of anger that made me realize she wasn’t afraid of him showing up.

She was afraid of what he would reveal.

Mark looked at her.

“You really thought you could keep this going forever?””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“This is not your business.””

Mark gave a humorless laugh.

“Actually, it became my business the second you promised me you would leave Daniel after you got what you wanted.””

My stomach twisted.

I looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him. He’s bitter.””

“Bitter?”” Mark said.

“That’s your excuse?””

He looked at me.

“I know you probably hate me right now. I understand why. But I came here because your daughter doesn’t deserve what Vanessa was planning.””

The mention of Nia made my attention lock onto him.

“What was she planning?””

Mark held out the envelope.

“Read it.””

I didn’t take it immediately.

Instead, I stared at Vanessa.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the moment my last bit of hope disappeared.

I took the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, text messages, and documents.

The first page was an email between Vanessa and a real estate agent.

I read the first line.

*“Once Daniel signs the new family trust papers, the situation with the daughter will be handled.””*

My eyebrows pulled together.

Family trust papers?

I flipped to the next page.

A draft of a legal agreement.

My name.

Vanessa’s name.

And a section about inheritance.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“It’s nothing.””

“Nothing?””

I held up the paper.

“You created a legal agreement about my daughter’s inheritance.””

“No, Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked around.

The guests were no longer pretending not to listen.

Everyone was watching.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“This was supposed to protect our future.””

“Our future?””

I pointed at the document.

“This removes Nia as the primary beneficiary.””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“That’s not what it means.””

“Then what does it mean?””

Silence.

Mark answered for her.

“It means she wanted everything you built to go to her.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You’re jealous because I chose Daniel.””

Mark shook his head.

“No. I’m disgusted because you used everyone.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you helping me?””

He looked down.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“Because I helped create this mess.””

Everyone went quiet.

“What does that mean?””

Mark took a breath.

“Vanessa and I were together before you met her.””

I already knew that.

But something about his tone told me there was more.

“She didn’t leave me because she fell in love with you.””

My chest tightened.

“She left because she found out about your money.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Mark continued.

“She knew about your company. She knew about the house. She knew about Emily’s life insurance money that was placed into a trust for Nia.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Nobody knew about that trust.

Nobody except me.

And my attorney.

“How did you know?””

Mark looked at Vanessa.

“She told me.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I looked at the woman standing in front of me in her wedding dress.

The woman who had kissed me goodnight.

The woman who helped Nia with homework.

The woman who told me she wanted to heal my family.

Every memory suddenly felt different.

Like I was looking at it through broken glass.

Vanessa’s expression softened.

“Daniel, please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

“Don’t let him destroy us.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Destroy us?

She was still making herself the victim.

“You tried to remove my daughter from my wedding.””

“That was a mistake.””

“You tried to change her future.””

“That was just paperwork.””

“You were planning to separate her from me.””

Her eyes flashed.

“I never said that.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You just made sure she heard it.””

That hurt her.

Because it was true.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

Nia.

She was standing with Rachel, watching everything.

Her small face looked confused.

I immediately walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, you shouldn’t be hearing this.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Is she leaving?””

I froze.

Because even after everything, my daughter was worried about losing another person.

I knelt down.

“Nia…”

She whispered:

“I just want everyone to stop fighting.””

My heart broke.

I pulled her into my arms.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing someone into our lives who didn’t know how lucky she was.””

Nia hugged me tighter.

Then Mark’s voice came from behind.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

He was holding one final document.

“I didn’t show you the worst part.””

My expression hardened.

“What could possibly be worse?””

Mark looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“She didn’t just plan to take your money.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“She planned to make sure Nia could never come back to you.””
