Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Everything

I took the folder from Claire’s hands.

Vanessa immediately moved toward me.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

That sentence told me more than the papers could.

People who had nothing to hide usually didn’t panic when someone offered proof.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a copy of a message thread.

The second was a photograph.

The third was a document from a private investigator.

I looked at Claire.

“What is this?””

She glanced at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The truth.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“Claire, you have no right.””

“I have every right,” Claire replied.

“Especially after what you did to that little girl.””

The guests were still nearby.

Watching.

Waiting.

But for once, I didn’t care.

I read the messages.

They were between Vanessa and Mark.

The same Mark from the screenshot.

A man I had never heard of.

*Vanessa: “Once Daniel and I are married, everything changes.””*

*Mark: “And what about the daughter?””*

*Vanessa: “I’ll handle her.””*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“Who is Mark?”” I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous.””

“Who is he?””

“He’s nobody.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Don’t lie.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Stay out of this.””

“No. I stayed out of it for too long.””

The words made Vanessa freeze.

I looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Mark is Vanessa’s ex-boyfriend.””

My stomach sank.

“Ex?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Claire, stop.””

But Claire continued.

“They never really ended things.””

The noise around us disappeared.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“You were still seeing him?””

“No.””

The response came too quickly.

Claire pulled another paper from the folder.

“This was taken three weeks ago.””

I looked down.

A photograph.

Vanessa and a man sitting together at a restaurant.

Holding hands.

I felt something inside me go completely numb.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Disbelief.

Because I had spent three years building a future with someone who had been building a different one behind my back.

“Nia knew,” Claire said quietly.

I looked up.

“What?””

“She saw Vanessa with Mark once.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

Claire looked at her sister.

“You threatened her.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“She told Nia that if she told you, she would ruin your wedding.””

I felt my hands shaking.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you threaten my daughter?””

“No!””

Her voice cracked.

“She misunderstood.””

“My daughter understood enough to be scared.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, I love you.””

I stepped back.

“Stop saying that.””

“But I do.””

“No. You love the life you thought you were getting.””

She stared at me.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

I looked toward the entrance.

Toward the place where my daughter had stood alone.

Where she had been called unwanted.

Where she had begged to see me.

And I realized something.

The wedding wasn’t ruined today.

The wedding saved me.

Because I had almost married someone who wanted my daughter to disappear.

A staff member approached nervously.

“Mr. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“There’s someone asking to speak with you.””

“Who?””

The staff member looked uncomfortable.

“He says he’s here because of Vanessa.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Name?””

The man hesitated.

Then said:

“Mark Reynolds.””

Behind me, Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

I turned slowly.

At the end of the stone path stood a man in a dark suit.

The same man from the photograph.

And he was holding something in his hand.

A small envelope.

He walked closer.

May you like

“Daniel,” he said.

“I think you deserve to know what Vanessa planned for you after the wedding.””
