Chapter 14: The Woman Who Knew My Secret

I followed Vanessa outside the courthouse.

Not because I wanted a confrontation.

Because I needed the truth.

Six years ago, when Emily died, I thought grief was the hardest thing I would ever survive.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was discovering someone had been watching my broken life and seeing an opportunity.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped.

Slowly turned around.

“What?””

“Who told you about Emily’s trust?””

Her expression immediately became defensive.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Lie.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’ve been listening to everyone except me.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone except you?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“Mark hates me. Claire betrayed me. Linda has her own reasons. Everyone wants you to see me as a monster.””

I looked at her.

“You made yourself look that way.””

Her face tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes happen accidentally.””

I held up the document.

“This was planned.””

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“I needed security.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Security?””

“Yes.””

She looked around.

“You have no idea what it feels like to constantly worry about losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“You had me.””

She looked at me.

“That wasn’t enough.””

Those four words hurt more than any lie.

Because they were the truth.

Nothing I gave her would ever have been enough.

“Who told you?””

She looked away.

“Daniel.””

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Emily.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I met Emily before she died.””

The world stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“She contacted me.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She knew she was sick.””

I felt dizzy.

Emily never told me how serious it was until the final months.

“She wanted someone to help you.””

I stared.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Emily would never choose you.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Vanessa flinched.

But she recovered.

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That after she was gone, you would never move on.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked down.

“She told me about Nia.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She said Nia needed someone who would love her.””

For one second, I thought maybe there was truth hidden inside all of this.

Then Vanessa ruined it.

“She also told me about the trust.””

There it was.

The reason.

Not love.

Not concern.

Information.

“She trusted you.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“And I used that.””

The confession was quiet.

Almost invisible.

But I heard it.

“You admit it?””

She looked away.

“I didn’t start out planning everything.””

I said nothing.

“After I met you, I saw the life you had.””

She laughed sadly.

“And I wanted it.””

A cold wind passed between us.

“You didn’t want me.””

“I did.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted what came with me.””

Her eyes filled.

Maybe with regret.

Maybe with anger.

I couldn’t tell anymore.

My phone rang.

James.

I answered.

“What happened?””

His voice was urgent.

“Daniel, we found Emily’s old messages.””

I froze.

“What messages?””

“Emails she sent before she died.””

My grip tightened.

“To who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Vanessa.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

And suddenly I understood.

There was still a missing piece.

Something even Vanessa had been hiding.

James continued:

“Daniel, you need to see this.””

“What does it say?””

Silence.

Then:

“Emily wasn’t asking Vanessa to help raise Nia.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“Then what was she asking?””

May you like

James’s voice dropped.

“She was warning her.””
