Chapter 10: The Recording She Never Meant To Share

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“A recording?”” I asked.

James lowered his voice.

“Yes.””

I looked at Nia sitting beside me.

She was watching my face carefully.

Children always know when something changes.

They may not understand the details, but they feel the weight.

“Where are you?”” I asked James.

“At the office. I’m sending it now.””

The message arrived seconds later.

A small audio file.

No name.

No description.

Just a timestamp from three weeks before the wedding.

I stared at it.

Three weeks.

Three weeks before Vanessa stood in my kitchen and kissed me goodbye.

Three weeks before she helped Nia choose flowers.

Three weeks before she looked into my eyes and promised she was ready to become a family.

My finger hovered over the play button.

I almost didn’t want to hear it.

Because some part of me still wanted there to be an explanation.

A misunderstanding.

Anything.

But then I remembered Nia’s tears.

I remembered the security guard grabbing her arm.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“I’m telling you, Mark, this has to happen after the wedding.””

My stomach dropped.

Mark’s voice answered.

“You’re sure he’ll sign everything?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa sounded calm.

Too calm.

“He trusts me.””

I felt sick.

The woman I loved was discussing me like I was a business deal.

Mark spoke again.

“And the girl?””

A pause.

Then Vanessa answered.

“Nia will be the hardest part.””

My hand shook.

I wanted to stop the recording.

But I couldn’t.

“She’s twelve,” Mark said.

“You can’t just erase her.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You’re being emotional.””

“No, I’m being realistic.””

“She’s attached to Daniel. That’s the problem.””

The problem.

That word burned.

“She reminds him of Emily,” Vanessa continued.

I closed my eyes.

Even hearing my late wife’s name from her mouth felt wrong.

“If Nia wasn’t there all the time, Daniel would finally focus on me.””

Mark was quiet.

Then:

“You really think you can make him choose?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“He already chose me.””

My jaw tightened.

“He doesn’t know it yet.””

The recording continued.

“I’ll start small,” Vanessa said.

“What does that mean?””

“School changes. New routines. Less time together.””

“And if he refuses?””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood turn cold.

“Then I’ll make people believe he isn’t capable of handling her.””

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

Not because I didn’t believe it.

Because I did.

Every piece fit.

The wedding.

The guardianship filing.

The lies about Nia.

All of it.

Rachel came into the room.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Vanessa planned everything.””

She saw my face.

She didn’t ask questions.

She just hugged me.

And for the first time in two days, I let myself feel everything.

The anger.

The betrayal.

The grief.

Not just because I lost Vanessa.

But because I almost brought danger into my daughter’s life.

My phone rang again.

James.

I answered.

“We have enough to fight this,” he said.

“Enough to win?””

A pause.

“Daniel, courts don’t work like revenge stories. But this changes everything.””

I looked at Nia.

“What happens next?””

“She’ll try to settle before the hearing.””

“Why?””

“Because she knows that recording destroys her.””

I looked at the phone.

“And if she doesn’t?””

James became quiet.

“Then tomorrow, everyone hears it.””

That night, I sat beside Nia’s bed until she fell asleep.

She held onto my hand.

Like she was afraid I would disappear.

I stayed.

I watched the little girl who had lost her mother.

Then almost lost the only parent she had left.

And I made a promise.

Not out loud.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Nobody would ever make her feel unwanted again.

The next morning, when I arrived at the courthouse, Vanessa was already there.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was a woman in a dark suit carrying a folder.

My attorney stopped walking.

His expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“That’s Vanessa’s new lawyer.””

I looked at the woman.

She smiled politely.

Then whispered something to Vanessa.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

And smiled.

Not a scared smile.

Not a defeated one.

A confident one.

James noticed too.

“That’s not good.””

“Why?””

“Because someone who knows they’re losing doesn’t look that calm.””

The courtroom doors opened.

And Vanessa’s lawyer stepped inside.

Holding a file.
