Chapter 15: Emily’s Last Warning
I couldn’t speak.
The words stayed in my head.
*Emily was warning her.*
Not trusting her.
Not choosing her.
Warning her.
“Send me the messages,” I said.
James did.
Seconds later, my phone filled with screenshots.
Emails.
Dates.
Names.
The first message was from Emily.
*Vanessa, I know you have been talking to Daniel.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
The second line:
*I need to ask you to stop contacting my family.*
My chest tightened.
Family.
Emily had known.
The third line:
*Daniel is vulnerable right now. Nia is grieving. Please do not take advantage of their situation.*
I stopped reading.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told me you met Emily because she trusted you.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“She did.””
“No.””
I turned my phone toward her.
“She warned you.””
Her silence was enough.
I kept reading.
Emily’s final message.
*I don’t know what your intentions are, but I know my daughter deserves people who love her without wanting something in return.*
My vision blurred.
Because Emily had seen it.
Before anyone else.
Before me.
She knew.
“How did you respond?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“How did you respond?””
Her voice became quiet.
“I told her she was wrong.””
“And?””
“I told her she didn’t know me.””
I stared at her.
“You proved her right.””
Vanessa looked angry now.
“You don’t understand.””
“No, I do.””
I stepped back.
“I understand everything.””
The woman standing in front of me wasn’t someone who suddenly became cruel.
She had been showing me pieces of herself the entire time.
I just wanted to believe the good parts were real.
My phone buzzed.
Another message from James.
This one had an attachment.
A voice recording.
I opened it.
Emily’s voice filled my phone.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakably hers.
“Daniel…”
My breath stopped.
I hadn’t heard her voice in six years.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Her actual voice.
I nearly dropped the phone.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, something happened that made you find this.””
I closed my eyes.
Tears burned.
“I hope I’m wrong about Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“But if I’m not…”
Emily paused.
A quiet breath.
“Protect Nia.””
The recording continued.
“People who truly love children don’t ask them to disappear.””
My hands trembled.
“She may seem kind. She may seem patient. But watch what happens when she doesn’t get what she wants.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying now.
Not because of me.
Because Emily’s voice was exposing the truth.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“She hated me.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“She saw you.””
That hurt her.
Because she knew.
She knew Emily had been right.
A car horn sounded nearby.
I turned.
A man was standing beside a parked vehicle.
Holding a folder.
James walked toward us.
His expression was serious.
“Daniel.””
“What now?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“We found out who helped Vanessa create the guardianship case.””
I waited.
“Who?””
James opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A name.
And a connection I never expected.
“Daniel…”
He handed me the page.
“The person helping Vanessa wasn’t just a lawyer.””
I looked down.

And my blood went cold.
Because the name on the document belonged to someone from my own family.
