Chapter 17: The File That Was Never Supposed To Exist
The moment Eric said those words, my entire body went tense.
“The last file?””
Eric looked at me.
He knew he had said too much.
“What file?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What file, Eric?””
Before he could respond, another car pulled up.
Vanessa.
She stepped out.
Not crying.
Not angry.
Calm.
That scared me more than anything.
Because the Vanessa I knew always reacted emotionally when she lost control.
This Vanessa looked prepared.
She walked toward us.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t move.
“What is the last file?””
Her eyes flicked toward Eric.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Then she smiled.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“Don’t lie.””
She sighed.
“You’ve been listening to everyone but me.””
“No.””
I held up the documents.
“I’ve been listening to evidence.””
Her expression hardened.
“Evidence can be manipulated.””
“So can people.””
That hit her.
She looked away.
Eric stepped back.
“I should go.””
I turned.
“You’re not leaving.””
He stopped.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
I looked at both of them.
“I’m done finding out the truth one piece at a time.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Fine.””
Her voice changed.
“You want to know why I did all of this?””
I waited.
“Because I knew I would always lose.””
“Lose what?””
She looked toward the courthouse.
“You.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I watched you every day.””
Her voice became softer.
“You would wake up early to pack Nia’s lunch. You remembered every school event. You knew her favorite foods. You knew when she was pretending to be okay.””
She swallowed.
“And I knew I could never compete with that.””
“That wasn’t a competition.””
“It was to me.””
There it was again.
The truth.
Her biggest problem was never Nia.
It was that she saw love as something limited.
“You should have walked away.””
“I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I wanted your life.””
The honesty shocked me.
Not because it was surprising.
Because she finally stopped pretending.
“I wanted the house. The company. The security.””
She looked down.
“And yes… I wanted you.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted what I represented.””
She didn’t argue.
Then she reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small envelope.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?””
She looked at it.
“Something Emily left behind.””
The world went silent.
“What?””
Vanessa held it tightly.
“I found it after she died.””
My anger disappeared.
Replaced by confusion.
“How?””
She looked at me.
“Because Eric helped me.””
I turned toward Eric.
He closed his eyes.
“You found Emily’s things?””
Eric spoke quietly.
“After the funeral, I helped organize some paperwork.””
My chest tightened.
“And you gave them to Vanessa?””
“No.””
Eric looked ashamed.
“She found them.””
Vanessa opened the envelope.
“I didn’t read everything.””
I stared.
“Why would I believe you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
She handed it to me.
“Read it yourself.””
I took the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Emily’s handwriting.
My hands shook.
I read the first line.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, then I’m gone.*
My vision blurred.
I kept reading.
*I need you to remember something important. Nia is not the reason you stopped living. She is the reason you kept going.*
I closed my eyes.
A tear fell.
Then I reached the next paragraph.
*But there is something else you need to know. Before I died, I discovered someone close to us was trying to use my trust for Nia.*
My heartbeat increased.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at the letter.
The next line was underlined.
*I never found out who it was.*
I stopped.
Because suddenly I understood.
The danger had started before Vanessa.
Before the wedding.
Before the guardianship.
Someone had been watching us for years.
Someone had wanted Emily’s trust.
May you like
And the final page of the letter had only one sentence.
*Daniel, trust no one who knew about the account.*
