Chapter 13: The Final Piece Of Her Plan

I stared at the document in James’s hand.

For a moment, I didn’t understand the words.

Then I read the title.

*Temporary Business Authority Transfer Agreement.*

My stomach dropped.

“What is this?””

James looked around before answering.

“Not here.””

We moved down the courthouse hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

The wedding.

The guardianship.

The lies.

I thought I had finally uncovered everything.

But Vanessa had been playing a bigger game.

“She wasn’t just trying to become your wife,” James said quietly.

“She was trying to become the person who controlled everything.””

I looked at the document again.

“This requires my signature.””

“Yes.””

“And she doesn’t have it.””

“She was trying to get it.””

“How?””

James opened another file.

“Remember the papers Vanessa told you were for ‘protecting our future’?””

I nodded.

“The trust documents.””

“Those weren’t just about inheritance.””

He pointed to a section.

A section I had never noticed.

A section buried beneath pages of legal language.

*Spousal management authorization.*

If signed, Vanessa would have gained temporary control over financial decisions if I became “unable to manage personal affairs.””

I looked up.

“She wanted me to sign this before the wedding.””

James nodded.

“And after the wedding, she planned to use the guardianship case as evidence that you were emotionally unstable.””

The hallway suddenly felt too small.

“She was going to use her own accusations against me.””

“Exactly.””

I thought about every conversation.

Every time Vanessa asked me if I trusted her.

Every time she told me we needed to “protect our family.””

She wasn’t building a family.

She was building a trap.

My phone buzzed.

A message from the bank.

*Security alert: Multiple attempts made to access restricted accounts.*

I showed James.

His expression hardened.

“She already started.””

My hands clenched.

“How much access did she get?””

“Not enough to move anything.””

“Because?””

“Because your accounts require additional verification.””

I exhaled.

For the first time, Vanessa’s perfect plan had failed.

Not because she wasn’t clever.

Because she underestimated one thing.

She underestimated how far I would go to protect Nia.

The courthouse doors opened.

Vanessa walked out with Rebecca.

She saw us.

Her expression changed immediately.

She knew.

Somehow, she knew we found out.

“What did you tell him?”” Vanessa asked Rebecca.

Rebecca looked confused.

“I didn’t tell him anything.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

The words slipped out.

Then she realized what she had said.

Silence.

James looked at me.

I looked at her.

“You just admitted it.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I meant the documents.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You meant the plan.””

Her eyes hardened.

“You think you’re better than me?””

I almost didn’t recognize her.

Not because she was angry.

Because she was finally showing me who she had always been.

“You think you can walk away with everything and leave me with nothing?””

I stared at her.

“I never wanted to leave you with nothing.””

She laughed.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

“Innocent?””

“You had everything.””

She pointed toward the courtroom.

“A perfect daughter. A successful company. A beautiful home.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I was always just the woman standing beside you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s because you never wanted to stand beside me.””

She looked away.

“You wanted to replace everyone.””

Her eyes flashed.

“I wanted what was mine.””

I froze.

“What was yours?””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

And that smile sent a chill through me.

“Everything Emily left behind.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

She turned away.

But not before I saw it.

A flicker of fear.

Because she had revealed something she never meant to.

James stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

I was thinking about Emily.

My late wife.

The life insurance.

The trust.

The things Vanessa knew about.

Things she shouldn’t have known.

Then James whispered:

“Ask her how she found out about the trust.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

“Who told you about Emily’s money?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

May you like

She didn’t answer.

And that silence was the answer.
