Chapter 18: The Enemy We Never Saw
I read the sentence again.
*Trust no one who knew about the account.*
My fingers trembled.
Because the list of people who knew was very short.
My attorney.
My bank.
And Eric.
And now Vanessa.
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
Vanessa.
Eric.
James.
All of them watching me.
“What account?”” James asked.
I looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
That changed everything.
Because James was my attorney.
He had handled Emily’s trust.
If he didn’t know, then someone else had been involved.
Someone outside the official process.
“Daniel,” James said slowly.
“What exactly did Emily write?””
I handed him the letter.
He read it carefully.
Then looked up.
“This changes things.””
“How?””
“Because Vanessa’s plan may not have started with you.””
I looked toward Vanessa.
She understood immediately.
“You think I had something to do with Emily?””
The question sounded genuine.
For the first time, she looked shocked.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I never hurt Emily.””
I believed that.
But I also knew something else.
She didn’t have to hurt someone to take advantage of their pain.
James continued reading.
“Did Emily mention anyone else?””
I looked at the letter.
There was one part I hadn’t noticed.
A small handwritten note in the corner.
A name.
My heart stopped.
“Thomas.””
James looked up.
“Thomas?””
I nodded.
“Vanessa’s financial advisor.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
I looked at her.
“But you paid him.””
Her expression changed.
“How do you know that?””
“Because we found the records.””
Silence.
Then James said:
“Thomas may be the connection.””
I felt the pieces moving.
The debts.
The trust.
The business documents.
The guardianship.
Maybe Vanessa wasn’t the person who started this.
Maybe she was only one part of something bigger.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“This is Thomas Bell.””
Everyone became still.
I put the phone on speaker.
“What do you want?””
A quiet laugh.
“You finally figured it out.””
My stomach tightened.
“Figured out what?””
“That Vanessa was never the real threat.””
I looked at James.
“Then who are you?””
The man laughed again.
“Someone who has been waiting for Emily’s trust to become available.””
My blood ran cold.
“You’re talking about my daughter’s money.””
“Not just her money.””
“What else?””
A pause.
Then:
“Everything Emily built.””
I gripped the phone.
“You’ve been manipulating Vanessa.””
“Manipulating?””
He sounded offended.
“No. I gave her what she wanted.””
“What?””
“A family.””
The word made me angry.
“You gave her a fantasy.””
“I gave her motivation.””
I walked away from everyone.
“Where is Vanessa’s involvement?””
Thomas laughed.
“She was useful.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“What?””
The voice continued.
“She was desperate. Ambitious. Emotional.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You used her.””
Silence.
Then Thomas answered:
“Yes.””
Vanessa stepped back.
For the first time, I saw something different in her expression.
Not anger.
Betrayal.
“You promised me—”
Thomas interrupted.
“Don’t pretend you weren’t willing.””
Vanessa went silent.
Because he was right.
She had made choices.
But he had used them.
I looked at Thomas.
“What do you want?””
“I want what was supposed to be mine.””
“You’re insane.””
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“I’m patient.””
Then he said something that froze me.
“Ask your daughter what she found in Emily’s old things.””
I looked toward Nia.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
The call ended.
Everyone stared at me.
I slowly walked inside.
“Nia?””
She looked up.
“Yes, Dad?””
I knelt beside her.
“Did you find something of your mother’s?””
Her face changed.
A tiny flicker of fear.
I noticed.
And my heart sank.
“Nia.””
She looked down.
“I didn’t want to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
She reached into her backpack.
And pulled out a small box.
“I found this hidden in Mom’s old closet.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a key.
And a note.

Only three words were written on it.
*“For Daniel. Open.””*
