Chapter 9: The Enemy at My Door
By morning, the entire situation changed.
For weeks, Laura and Ryan had controlled the story.
They painted me as the angry husband.
The controlling businessman.
The man who couldn’t accept losing.
But they made one mistake.
They underestimated how much evidence they left behind.
At 9 a.m., Rachel arrived with a team of investigators.
She placed several folders on my desk.
“We found the money trail.””
I looked at her.
“And?””
“Ryan has been in debt for years.””
“How much?””
“Enough to ruin him.””
She opened the folder.
“He wasn’t looking for love.””
I stared at the records.
“He was looking for a way out.””
Rachel nodded.
“Laura was his access point.””
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
Even though I had seen the evidence.
Hearing it said out loud made it real.
“My wife was just a doorway.””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“That’s worse.””
Rachel understood.
Because betrayal hurts differently when the person hurting you is someone who once promised to protect you.
At noon, I received another message.
From Laura.
“Please meet me alone.””
I almost ignored it.
But something told me to go.
We met at a small park near Ethan’s school.
The same place where we used to take him when he was younger.
Laura sat on a bench.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
No confidence.
Just a person who finally realized the consequences of her choices.
“Where is Ethan?””
“With my sister.””
“Why?””
“Because Ryan scared me.””
I stared at her.
“You let him take our son.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“You knew he was dangerous.””
“I didn’t at first.””
I laughed quietly.
“How convenient.””
“Jason, listen.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
She looked down.
“I thought I was choosing a better life.””
“And now?””
“Now I think I destroyed everything.””
I wanted to feel satisfaction.
I wanted to feel like I had won.
But looking at her, I only felt tired.
“Why did you do it?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Because I felt invisible.””
I shook my head.
“You weren’t invisible.””
“I was.””
“No, Laura.””
My voice became quiet.
“You just stopped looking at the person who was there.””
She cried.
For a moment, she looked like the woman I married.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“Ryan wasn’t the one who found me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was introduced to me.””
“By who?””
She looked terrified.
“Your brother.””
Michael.
Again.
My stomach turned.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I swear.””
She grabbed my hand.
I pulled away.
“Jason, Michael told Ryan about your father’s trust. He knew exactly what Ryan wanted.””
I stood.
“And you still worked with them.””
Her face fell.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But I needed it.
“Why tell me now?””
“Because Ryan is going to hurt you.””
I stared at her.
“He already did.””
“No.””
Her voice dropped.
“You don’t understand.””
“What don’t I understand?””
She looked around nervously.
Then whispered:
“Ryan never wanted your company.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
Laura looked at me.
“He wanted what your father hid.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did my father hide?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And her face turned white.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
She just showed me the phone.
A message from Ryan.
One sentence.
“Tell Jason the truth, or I tell him myself.””
Then another message appeared.
A name.
A name I hadn’t heard in years.
A name that made Laura start shaking.
Because it belonged to the person who started all of this.
My father’s former business partner.
A man everyone believed was dead.
May you like
But according to Ryan’s message…
He was alive.
