Chapter 5: The Line They Crossed

I stared at the picture until the screen went dark.

Then I turned it back on and looked again.

Ethan.

My son.

Standing beside Ryan.

The same man who shoved me.

The same man who looked at my family like it was something he could purchase.

My hands started shaking.

Not from anger.

From fear.

Because there was one thing I could tolerate.

Betrayal.

But using my son as a weapon?

That was different.

I called Laura immediately.

She answered after one ring.

“Jason.””

“Why is Ryan near Ethan?””

Silence.

Then:

“Calm down.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Don’t tell me to calm down.””

“You’re overreacting.””

“Overreacting?””

I stood from my chair.

“You sent me a picture of my son with a man who attacked me.””

“He didn’t attack you.””

My jaw dropped.

“He pushed me.””

“You were both angry.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The rewriting of reality.

The attempt to make me question what happened.

“Laura, answer my question.””

“He was just talking to him.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan likes him.””

The room became silent.

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

“Ethan barely knows him.””

“He’s nice to him.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Nice?””

“Yes.””

“Laura, a stranger doesn’t get to replace a father because he buys a child ice cream.””

She became defensive.

“Don’t make Ryan sound like a bad person.””

I looked at the picture again.

“You really don’t see it, do you?””

“See what?””

“That you’re protecting him.””

“I’m trying to move on.””

“No.””

I lowered my voice.

“You’re trying to erase me.””

She didn’t answer.

Because we both knew I was right.

I went to Ethan’s school that afternoon.

Not because I didn’t trust him.

Because I didn’t trust the adults around him.

When he saw me, he ran across the playground.

“Dad!””

I knelt down and hugged him.

“Hey, buddy.””

His smile faded.

“Are you mad?””

“No.””

“Mom said you were upset.””

I looked at him.

“I’m upset about grown-up things. Never about you.””

He nodded.

Then he whispered:

“Ryan said he could teach me basketball.””

My chest tightened.

“What else did he say?””

Ethan looked confused.

“Nothing.””

“Buddy, did he ask you questions?””

“Like what?””

“About me?””

He looked down.

“A little.””

“What kind of questions?””

Ethan hesitated.

“He asked if you were always busy.””

I felt something cold settle inside me.

“What did you say?””

“That you work a lot but you always come home.””

I swallowed.

Because even after everything, my son defended me.

I touched his shoulder.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

“What?””

“Adults sometimes ask questions because they want information. You don’t have to answer anything that makes you uncomfortable.””

He nodded.

“Okay.””

Then he looked at me.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you and Mom getting divorced?””

I froze.

The question I had been avoiding.

I sat beside him on the bench.

“I don’t know yet.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t want two homes.””

I pulled him close.

“I know.””

“I want us to be a family.””

I looked across the playground.

Children laughed.

Parents watched.

Everything looked normal.

But my son’s world had already changed.

And that was the part Laura would never understand.

That night, I met with my attorney.

Her name was Rachel Morgan.

She had handled my business contracts for years, but she had never needed to handle my personal life.

Until now.

She placed a folder on the table.

“Jason, I reviewed everything.””

“And?””

She looked serious.

“Laura’s agreement is designed to make you appear cooperative while transferring control.””

“How much?””

“Potentially millions.””

I nodded.

“Can she do it?””

“Not without your signature.””

I leaned back.

“So the message was right.””

Rachel looked at me.

“What message?””

I showed her the evidence.

She read everything.

Then she looked up.

“She planned this carefully.””

“Yes.””

“But there’s something strange.””

“What?””

“She didn’t need a divorce to access certain information.””

I frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Rachel opened another document.

“Somebody gave Ryan inside knowledge.””

I looked at the page.

A name appeared.

A company employee.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had worked with me for years.

I stared.

“No.””

Rachel watched me.

“Do you know him?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the person listed there wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who attended my wedding.

Someone who called me family.

Someone who had hugged Ethan when he was born.

My own brother.

Michael.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Michael.

For a moment, I didn’t answer.

Then I did.

“Hello?””

His voice sounded nervous.

“Jason…”

“What?””

A pause.

Then he whispered:

“I need to tell you something before Laura does.””

I stood.

“What did you do, Michael?””

Another silence.

Then his answer came.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“I helped her.””
