Chapter 17: The Woman Behind Every Lie

The room went silent.

Ryan’s mother.

The accountant.

The person who had been hiding in the shadows.

The person who knew every secret.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Except one thing.

Why?

Why destroy so many lives?

Why wait decades?

Why use Laura?

Why use Michael?

Why use Ryan?

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know.””

His eyes were empty.

“No.””

For the first time, Ryan looked powerless.

“You thought you were in control.””

He didn’t respond.

“You thought you were taking revenge for your father.””

His face tightened.

“She told me the truth.””

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“What truth?””

Ryan looked at the letter.

“That your father destroyed my family.””

I held up the document.

“Your mother gave you a story.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“A story where she was the victim.””

Ryan stepped back.

“No.””

“She needed you angry.””

“No.””

“She needed you to believe you were fighting for justice.””

His breathing became heavier.

“Stop.””

“Ryan, your mother used you.””

His expression broke.

Because deep down, he already knew.

The police took Ryan into custody.

Not because he was the mastermind.

Because he still committed crimes.

He still threatened my son.

He still crossed lines he could never uncross.

But before they took him away, he stopped beside me.

“I really believed I was doing the right thing.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

He seemed surprised.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

“Because believing you’re right doesn’t excuse what you do.””

He looked down.

Then quietly said:

“Find her.””

I nodded.

“I will.””

Margaret Vale disappeared before we could reach her.

Of course she did.

People who spend years controlling others know when the walls are closing in.

Rachel tracked her movements.

Bank accounts.

Old properties.

Connections.

But every trail ended.

Until we found one thing.

A message.

Sent from Margaret to Ryan two days before the kidnapping.

“You are not my son anymore if you fail.””

I read it twice.

My stomach turned.

A mother.

Threatening her own child.

That was the person behind everything.

Not love.

Not revenge.

Control.

Three days later, we found Margaret.

She wasn’t hiding.

That surprised me.

She was sitting in an old office building downtown.

The same building where my father started his company.

When I walked inside, she was waiting.

An older woman.

Calm.

Elegant.

No fear.

“You look like him.””

I stared.

“Like who?””

“Your father.””

I sat across from her.

“You ruined my family.””

She smiled faintly.

“No.””

“I watched my wife betray me.””

“I watched my son get used.””

“That was your choice.””

She tilted her head.

“You still think everything is about you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your father was never a good man.””

I said nothing.

Because part of me feared she might say something true.

She continued.

“He took everything from us.””

“He bought the company.””

“He stole an empire.””

I placed the documents on the table.

“Then why does your own son not know the truth?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You manipulated him.””

“I protected him.””

“You destroyed him.””

Silence.

Then she smiled.

“You’re more like your father than I expected.””

“How?””

“You think facts are enough.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

“Your father did buy the company.””

“Yes.””

“But he never told you why.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because the company was never the prize.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret leaned closer.

“The company was only a doorway.””

“To what?””

She smiled.

“To something your father hid beneath it.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What?””

She stood.

“Ask your mother.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Your mother knows.””

I stood.

“She told me everything.””

“No.””

Margaret smiled.

“She told you what your father wanted you to know.””

My phone buzzed.

Rachel.

I answered.

Her voice was urgent.

“Jason.””

“What?””

“We found another document.””

“Where?””

“In your father’s private archive.””

I waited.

“Rachel.””

She hesitated.

“Jason, this one has your name on it.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does it say?””

A long pause.

Then:

“It says your father never intended for you to own the company.””

I looked at Margaret.

May you like

She smiled.

“Now you understand.””
