Chapter 14: My Mother’s Confession
When I returned home, my mother was sitting in the living room.
The same room where I had cried alone after discovering Laura’s betrayal.
The same room where I stared at family pictures and wondered what went wrong.
Now the biggest secret of my life was sitting ten feet away.
My mother.
Alive.
She looked at me.
“I know you’re angry.””
I didn’t answer.
“I deserve that.””
I walked past her.
“No.””
She looked surprised.
“No?””
“I don’t even know what I feel.””
And that was the truth.
Anger was simple.
This was something else.
It was grief mixed with relief.
Love mixed with betrayal.
A lifetime of missing someone who had never actually left.
“Why?”” I asked.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father asked me to disappear.””
I turned around.
“Dad?””
She nodded.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he found out the truth.””
“What truth?””
She looked down.
“That someone inside the company was trying to kill him.””
The room went silent.
“Kill him?””
She nodded.
“Your father discovered a financial conspiracy.””
“Victor?””
“No.””
“Your uncle?””
“No.””
I stared.
“Then who?””
She looked at me.
“Someone we trusted.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather died before I was born.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because the person controlling everything now is his successor.””
I felt dizzy.
“What are you saying?””
“My father-in-law built the original company.””
I stared.
“Then my family…”
“Was never as simple as you thought.””
My mother told me everything.
The company began generations before me.
My grandfather built it.
Then my father expanded it.
But years later, my grandfather’s original partner wanted control.
When my father refused, a war began.
Hidden lawsuits.
Financial attacks.
Manipulation.
Then my father discovered the final betrayal.
Someone inside the family was helping the enemy.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your father believed you were safer not knowing.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She reached for my hand.
“I know.””
I pulled away.
“I lost my childhood.””
Tears fell down her face.
“I know.””
“I lost you.””
“I know.””
“I spent years thinking you were gone.””
Her voice broke.
“I know.””
I looked at her.
“Do you understand what that did to me?””
She nodded.
“No.””
I stopped.
She looked at me.
“I don’t.””
Her honesty surprised me.
“I can never understand that pain.””
For the first time, I saw something different.
Not an excuse.
Not a defense.
Regret.
“I’m sorry, Jason.””
I sat down.
Because despite everything…
She was still my mother.
That night, Rachel arrived with new information.
“We found something.””
“What?””
She placed a folder on the table.
“Ryan’s real identity.””
I opened it.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Ryan Mitchell.
Except that wasn’t his real name.
The name underneath made my blood freeze.
“Ryan Hale.””
My mother stood.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know him?””
She covered her mouth.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
She whispered:
“Victor’s son.””
I stared.
Everything connected.
The affair.
The company.
The revenge.
Ryan wasn’t randomly attacking me.
He was continuing something that started decades ago.
Rachel looked at the documents.
“He changed his name years ago.””
“Why?””
My mother answered quietly.
“To erase his father’s history.””
I looked at the page.
Ryan Hale.
Victor Hale’s son.
The man who had manipulated my wife.
The man who threatened my child.
The man who believed my family owed him something.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Ryan.
“You finally know.””
My voice became cold.
“Your real name.””
He laughed.
“Names are just masks.””
“Where is Ethan?””
“He’s safe.””
“Let me speak to him.””
“No.””
My fist tightened.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then:
“The truth.””
“What truth?””
“The truth your father stole from my family.””
I looked at my mother.
“You mean your father’s lies.””
Ryan’s voice changed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
Then he said:
“Your father didn’t build Carter Holdings.””
My heart stopped.
“He stole it.””
The call ended.
I looked at everyone in the room.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure anymore.
May you like
What if Ryan wasn’t lying?
What if my entire life was built on someone else’s stolen dream?
