Chapter 15: The Company That Was Never Mine

The next morning, I walked into Carter Holdings and felt like a stranger.

Same building.

Same employees.

Same name on the glass doors.

But everything felt different.

Because for the first time, I wondered if it belonged to me.

Rachel walked beside me.

“You don’t believe him, do you?””

I looked ahead.

“I don’t know.””

She stopped.

“Jason.””

“My father hid everything.””

“That doesn’t mean Ryan is telling the truth.””

“I know.””

“But?””

I sighed.

“But I need to know.””

Because that was the one thing I had learned.

Secrets destroyed families.

Truth, even painful truth, was better.

In my father’s private archive, we found the answer.

Old records.

Original agreements.

Documents hidden behind layers of legal protection.

Rachel opened the final file.

“This is it.””

I looked at the paper.

My hands shook.

“What does it say?””

She read silently.

Then looked at me.

“Jason.””

“What?””

“You need to see this yourself.””

I took the document.

The title read:

“Original Ownership Transfer Agreement.””

I read the first paragraph.

And my world changed.

My father did not steal the company.

But he didn’t inherit it either.

He bought it.

From the person who originally created it.

Victor’s father.

I looked up.

“Ryan lied.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“Because he needed you to doubt yourself.””

I looked at the signature.

My father’s name.

Then another.

Victor Hale Sr.

The truth was simple.

My father built the company legally.

But someone wanted the world to believe he was a thief.

Because revenge was easier when it had a story.

Then my phone rang.

Laura.

I answered.

“Where is Ethan?””

Her voice shook.

“Jason, you need to listen.””

“What happened?””

“Ryan knows we found out.””

My expression changed.

“How?””

“He’s angry.””

“Where is my son?””

A pause.

Then:

“He took him.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He left with Ethan.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

I stood immediately.

“Laura.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

My voice became sharp.

“Not this time.””

“Jason, please.””

“You helped him get close to our son.””

“I know.””

“You ignored every warning.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me where he is.””

She started crying.

“I don’t know.””

I closed my eyes.

Not again.

Not my son.

Rachel was already calling the authorities.

My mother stood silently nearby.

Then she suddenly spoke.

“I know where he is.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She walked toward the table.

“Ryan would choose a place connected to his father.””

“Where?””

She looked at the old documents.

Then pointed.

“An old Hale property.””

Rachel immediately searched.

“Found it.””

She looked at the screen.

“Abandoned estate outside the city.””

I grabbed my jacket.

Rachel stopped me.

“Jason, wait for backup.””

I looked at her.

“I waited before.””

“Jason.””

“And my son paid the price.””

She understood.

Because every second mattered.

When we arrived, the estate looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A place forgotten by time.

But there was one light on inside.

I walked toward the entrance.

Rachel followed behind with officers.

Then I heard it.

A voice.

Ethan.

“Dad?””

My heart nearly broke.

I rushed inside.

“Ethan!””

He ran toward me.

I grabbed him.

Held him.

Felt him shaking.

“You’re okay.””

“I knew you’d come.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’ll always come.””

Then I looked up.

Ryan stood across the room.

Calm.

Smiling.

“You really do love him.””

I stepped forward.

“Stay away from my son.””

Ryan laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

He looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“This was never about your company.””

My expression hardened.

“Then what?””

Ryan reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“This is what your father spent his entire life hiding.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

Ryan smiled.

“The reason your family destroyed mine.””

I looked at the envelope.

Then at him.

And for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if the final secret wasn’t about who betrayed my father.

But what my father did first.
