Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Plan
I spent the next morning doing something I hadn’t done in years.
I investigated my own marriage.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed the truth.
The truth had become the only thing I could trust.
Daniel sat across from me in the office, reviewing financial records.
“Jason, are you sure about this?””
I looked at the screen.
“Yes.””
“You know this could get ugly.””
I nodded.
“It already is.””
For eleven years, Laura had been beside me.
She knew my habits.
My passwords.
My schedule.
My weaknesses.
The person closest to you is often the person who knows exactly where to strike.
Daniel clicked another file.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“Ryan wasn’t just Laura’s trainer.””
I looked up.
“What do you mean?””
“He has a history.””
“Of what?””
Daniel turned the laptop toward me.
Several complaints appeared.
Financial disputes.
Failed partnerships.
People claiming he manipulated them.
My jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
“Because he keeps everything hidden behind a clean image.””
I stared at Ryan’s picture.
The confident smile.
The expensive clothes.
The perfect appearance.
I remembered him shoving me in front of my son.
A man who respected nothing because he believed he could get away with anything.
My phone rang.
Laura.
I answered.
“Jason.””
Her voice sounded nervous.
“What happened?””
“Why would you ask that?””
“Because Ryan is upset.””
I almost laughed.
“Ryan is upset?””
“Yes.””
“Interesting.””
She lowered her voice.
“You threatened him.””
“I asked him one question.””
“What question?””
“Whether he knows who I am.””
Silence.
Then:
“Jason, please don’t ruin everything.””
Everything.
That word stayed with me.
Not our family.
Not our marriage.
Everything.
“You already did that.””
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“But this isn’t about anger. This is about moving forward.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
“Moving forward with him?””
“Yes.””
She said it too quickly.
Like she had practiced.
“Laura, did you know about the investment company?””
Another silence.
A dangerous one.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
I watched the city below.
“Good answer.””
“Jason, what are you implying?””
“I’m asking a question.””
She became defensive.
“You always think everyone is against you.””
I almost smiled.
Because that sentence confirmed something.
She was afraid.
Before I could respond, Ethan’s school called.
I froze.
“Hold on.””
I answered the second phone.
“Hello?””
The teacher’s voice came through.
“Mr. Carter, Ethan mentioned something happened at the gym.””
My heart sank.
“What did he say?””
“He asked if his family was breaking apart.””
I closed my eyes.
The anger disappeared.
Only sadness remained.
After the call ended, I sat quietly.
No matter what happened between Laura and me, Ethan was the one paying the price.
That evening, I went home early.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
I found Ethan sitting on the floor of his room holding an old family photo.
“Hey, buddy.””
He looked up.
“Dad?””
I sat beside him.
“What’s that?””
He held up the picture.
“All of us before.””
Before.
That one word broke me.
“Do you think Mom will come back?””
I looked at him.
I wanted to promise him everything would be okay.
But promises were what had brought me here.
So instead, I told him the truth.
“I don’t know.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he whispered:
“I miss when things were normal.””
I pulled him into a hug.
“Me too.””
After Ethan fell asleep, I returned downstairs.
My laptop was open on the kitchen table.
A new email had arrived.
No sender name.
Just an attachment.
My heart immediately changed.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Not of Laura and Ryan.
Something worse.
Documents.
Bank transfers.
Private messages.
A conversation between Laura and Ryan from months earlier.
I read the first line.
My hands went cold.
“Once Jason signs the company transfer, everything belongs to us.””
I scrolled down.
More messages appeared.
Then I saw the date.
The plan had started before the kiss.
Before the gym.
Before I ever suspected anything.
And then I saw the final message from Ryan.
The one sent only hours after I left the gym.
It contained six words.
Six words that made me realize my wife had never planned to leave me.
She planned to destroy me.

The message said:
“Tomorrow, we take everything from him.””
