Chapter 11: The Secret in My Father’s Last Days

I couldn’t speak.

The warehouse suddenly felt smaller.

The air heavier.

“My father didn’t die naturally?””

Elena looked away.

“I knew this day would come.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone keeps using that excuse.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because everyone was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?””

“My wife betrayed me.””

“My brother betrayed me.””

“My son was used against me.””

I pointed at her.

“And you’re telling me everyone was protecting me?””

Elena looked down.

“You have no idea what your father was protecting you from.””

“Then explain.””

She walked toward an old table and placed a folder on it.

“This is everything.””

I opened it.

The first page was a medical report.

My father’s name.

My hands tightened.

“Heart failure?””

Elena nodded.

“That’s what the public believed.””

“And the truth?””

She looked at me.

“He was poisoned.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she opened another document.

A list of names.

Executives.

Partners.

Employees.

People connected to Carter Holdings.

At the bottom was one name.

Victor Hale.

I looked up.

“You said he wasn’t my enemy.””

“He wasn’t.””

“Then why is his name here?””

“Because your father blamed him publicly.””

“Why?””

“Because someone needed a villain.””

I felt a chill.

“Someone?””

Elena nodded.

“Your father discovered someone inside the company was stealing money.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle died years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re saying he was responsible?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the documents.

My father had an older brother.

A man I barely knew.

He died when I was young.

The family never talked about him.

“Why hide this?””

“Because your father discovered the theft wasn’t the worst part.””

“What was?””

Elena’s voice lowered.

“He wasn’t stealing money.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

“He was trying to destroy the company before your father could pass ownership to you.””

I looked at the papers.

“Why?””

“Because he believed the company belonged to him.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

Elena looked at me.

“Greed rarely does.””

I spent the next hour listening.

Learning things my father had buried.

Victor Hale had not betrayed my father.

He had helped him uncover the truth.

But when the investigation got dangerous, my father blamed Victor publicly to protect him.

The world believed Victor was the villain.

Meanwhile, the real traitor disappeared.

Until now.

“Why did Ryan find Victor?””

I asked.

Elena’s expression changed.

“Because Ryan was hired.””

“By who?””

She looked at me.

“You already know.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Michael?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I walked away.

My own brother.

Again.

But something didn’t fit.

“Michael isn’t smart enough to organize this.””

Elena nodded.

“Correct.””

“Then who?””

She looked toward the dark warehouse entrance.

“Someone is guiding him.””

My phone buzzed.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Jason, we have a problem.””

“What now?””

“Michael disappeared.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“He left his apartment two hours ago.””

“Did he take anything?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“What?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Your father’s original company documents.””

I looked at Elena.

Her face had gone pale.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

Elena stepped closer.

“He knows.””

“Who?””

“The person behind all of this.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Someone who was supposed to be dead.””

I returned home after midnight.

The house was dark.

But I knew I wasn’t alone.

I walked inside slowly.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then the lights turned on.

I froze.

A man sat in my living room.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

Someone I had only seen in old photographs.

Victor Hale.

Alive.

He stood.

“I know you have questions.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

He smiled sadly.

“That was the idea.””

“Who wanted you dead?””

He looked toward the family pictures on the wall.

Then back at me.

“The same person who is trying to take your life apart now.””

My voice became cold.

“Who?””

Victor walked closer.

“Your mother.””

I stared.

The world stopped.

“My mother died.””

“Yes.””

“Years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Victor looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t die because she was sick.””

My heart pounded.

“What are you saying?””

He placed a file on the table.

“I’m saying your entire family history is a lie.””

I opened the file.

The first page had one sentence.

May you like

A sentence that changed everything.

“Your mother was alive when your father died.””
