Chapter 2: The Secret Behind My Name

The next morning, Ethan didn’t ask about his mother.

That hurt more than if he had.

He sat at the kitchen table pushing cereal around his bowl, staring at the cartoon character printed on his spoon.

Usually, he talked nonstop.

About school.

About his friends.

About the newest game he wanted.

But that morning, he was silent.

I poured myself coffee and sat across from him.

“Hey.””

He looked up.

“Are you mad at Mom?””

The question was so innocent that I had to look away for a moment.

“I’m hurt,” I said.

“Because she kissed Ryan?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Ethan stared down.

“Does that mean she doesn’t love us anymore?””

A seven-year-old should never have to ask that.

I reached across the table and held his hand.

“Your mom’s choices are not because of anything you did.””

“But she likes him more?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I didn’t know.

Maybe Laura did.

Maybe she liked the excitement.

Maybe she liked the attention.

Maybe she liked the version of herself she became around Ryan.

But I knew one thing.

Ethan deserved honesty without being dragged into adult anger.

“Your mom loves you,” I said carefully.

He nodded, but his eyes stayed sad.

Later that morning, after dropping Ethan at school, I drove straight to my office.

Not the small company office where most people knew me.

The other one.

The one Laura had barely visited.

The one she always called “your mysterious business place.””

For years, Laura thought I was simply a successful consultant.

She knew I worked hard.

She knew I traveled.

She knew I invested.

But she never knew the full story.

Three years into our marriage, I created a private investment firm using money I had saved before we met.

Over time, it grew into something much bigger.

I kept my name away from the spotlight because I hated attention.

Laura always joked that I was the only man she knew who could own companies and still wear the same old jacket for ten years.

I laughed with her.

I trusted her.

Maybe that was my mistake.

When I entered my office, my assistant, Daniel, immediately stood.

“Jason, I heard what happened.””

I placed my keys on the desk.

“Who told you?””

He hesitated.

“The gym incident is already being talked about.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course it was.

People loved watching someone else’s life collapse.

“Daniel,” I said, “did the acquisition documents come through?””

He nodded.

“Yes. Everything is ready.””

“And the final approval?””

He looked at me.

“Waiting for your signature.””

I sat down.

“Good.””

Daniel studied my face.

“Are you sure you want to proceed?””

I looked out the window.

Below us, the city moved like nothing had changed.

But my entire world had shifted.

“More than ever.””

That afternoon, Laura called.

I let it ring twice before answering.

“Hello.””

Silence.

Then her voice.

“Jason.””

She sounded different.

Less confident.

“Where are you?””

“At work.””

“We need to talk.””

I leaned back.

“About what?””

“About yesterday.””

I almost laughed.

“Yesterday?””

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Act like I’m some kind of monster.””

I looked at the documents on my desk.

“Laura, you kissed another man in front of our son.””

“That’s not fair.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“Not fair?””

“No. You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She became quiet.

Finally, she said:

“I’ve been unhappy for a long time.””

I stared at the phone.

“You could have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“You were always busy.””

The old excuse.

The one people used when they wanted permission for choices they had already made.

I lowered my voice.

“You could have walked away before bringing Ethan into this.””

“Ryan makes me feel alive.””

There it was.

The sentence she probably thought was honest.

But all I heard was that she had chosen another man and expected me to understand.

“Are you asking for a divorce?””

Another pause.

Then:

“I think we both know where this is going.””

I looked at the papers again.

The final documents.

The ones she didn’t know about.

“Maybe you’re right.””

She softened.

“Jason…”

But I interrupted.

“One question.””

“What?””

“Does Ryan know who I am?””

Silence.

A long silence.

“What does that mean?””

I smiled slightly.

“You should ask him.””

I ended the call.

A few minutes later, Daniel walked in holding a folder.

“Jason, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He placed the folder on my desk.

“The ownership records were requested this morning.””

“By who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Ryan Mitchell.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a printed search report.

My eyes moved down the page.

And I saw why Ryan had been so confident.

He thought he knew exactly who I was.

But he had only found the name I allowed the world to see.

Then I noticed the attached note at the bottom.

A handwritten message.

From Ryan.

It said:

“Once Laura signs over the remaining shares, Jason will have nothing left.””

I stared at the sentence.

Remaining shares.

My wife hadn’t just betrayed me.

She was planning something.

May you like

But the question was…

How much of my life had she already handed to him?
