Chapter 13: The Brother Who Finally Spoke

I spent the entire drive to the police station trying to convince myself that I was ready.

I wasn’t.

Nothing about this story made sense anymore.

My wife betrayed me.

My brother betrayed me.

My father hid the truth.

My mother, the woman I mourned for most of my life, was alive.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it was a man named Ryan who thought he could destroy everything my family built.

But the strangest part was this:

I no longer knew who the enemy was.

When I entered the station, Rachel was waiting near the front desk.

Her expression told me everything.

“This is bad,” she said.

“How bad?””

“Bad enough that Michael asked for you specifically.””

I looked toward the interview rooms.

“Is he alone?””

“Yes.””

“Ryan?””

“Not here.””

I nodded.

Then I walked inside.

Michael sat at the table.

He looked nothing like the confident brother I knew.

His hair was messy.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

When he saw me, he immediately stood.

“Jason.””

I didn’t move.

“Sit down.””

He slowly sat.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said the words I never expected to hear.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You already said that.””

“No.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I mean it now.””

I leaned forward.

“Why now?””

“Because I know what they’re going to do.””

“Who?””

Michael swallowed.

“Ryan.””

I stared at him.

“Start talking.””

He nodded.

And for the first time in weeks, someone finally told me the truth without trying to protect themselves.

“I met Ryan six months ago,” Michael said.

“Six months?””

“Yes.””

“Before Laura?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“So this started before the affair.””

Michael nodded.

“Ryan approached me because he knew about the company.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“Michael, you sold information about my life.””

His face collapsed.

“I know.””

“Then tell me everything.””

He took a breath.

“Ryan said he had proof that your father’s company wasn’t supposed to belong to you.””

I frowned.

“What proof?””

“He said your father stole it.””

I almost laughed.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“I wanted to.””

That answer surprised me.

“Why?””

He looked at the table.

“Because I was tired of feeling like I was always behind you.””

There it was.

The truth beneath everything.

Not money.

Not opportunity.

Resentment.

“I gave you a job.””

“I know.””

“I helped you when you needed me.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

His eyes were red.

“Because every time you helped me, it reminded me that I needed help.””

I sat back.

For years, I thought loyalty came from history.

From blood.

From shared memories.

But I was wrong.

Some people don’t hate you because you hurt them.

They hate you because your existence reminds them of what they failed to become.

“So Ryan convinced you to betray me,” I said.

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

“No?””

“He convinced me I was finally getting what I deserved.””

I looked away.

“And Laura?””

“She was part of the plan.””

“How?””

“Ryan approached her after he knew she was unhappy.””

I felt a familiar pain.

“He targeted her.””

“Yes.””

“Did she know?””

Michael hesitated.

“She knew enough.””

That hurt.

Even now.

Even after everything.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“And the papers?””

“He needed her close to you.””

“For my signature.””

Michael nodded.

“He couldn’t access the trust without you.””

“Because of my father’s protection clause.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Who is behind Ryan?””

Michael became quiet.

Then he whispered:

“Elena knows.””

I frowned.

“She told me Victor was involved.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

“No?””

“Victor is trying to stop him.””

I froze.

“Then who?””

Michael looked terrified.

“Someone from your father’s company.””

“Who?””

He closed his eyes.

Then said:

“Your father’s former partner.””

I stared.

“Victor?””

“No.””

A long pause.

“Someone you’ve never met.””

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

“The real owner of the company before your father took control.””

When I walked out of the interview room, Rachel immediately stood.

“Well?””

I looked at her.

“Michael wasn’t working alone.””

Her face changed.

“Who?””

I lowered my voice.

“A man connected to my father’s original company.””

Rachel frowned.

“Name?””

I shook my head.

“We need Elena.””

Before we could move, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ryan.

One sentence.

“You’re asking the wrong people.””

I stared.

Then another message appeared.

“Your mother knows why your father died.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked back toward the interview room.

Then at Rachel.

Then at my phone.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Ryan wasn’t just trying to take my company.

He was trying to expose a secret.

A secret my father died protecting.

May you like

And the only person who could explain it…

Was my mother.
