Chapter 9: My Father’s Final Warning

I didn’t open the package until I got home.

Not because I wasn’t curious.

Because I was terrified.

For the last year, I believed my accident was the moment my life changed.

But maybe it wasn’t.

Maybe it was just the moment the truth started catching up with me.

The package sat on my kitchen table.

A simple brown box.

Something my father could have left behind years ago.

But somehow, it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Inside was a small journal.

A flash drive.

And one photograph.

The photograph was of my father standing beside Marcus.

I stared at it.

My father had known him.

For years.

I opened the journal.

The first page had a date.

Two months before my accident.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.*

My hands tightened.

I continued.

*Marcus is not who he claims to be.*

Page after page revealed things I never knew.

My father had discovered Marcus was manipulating company accounts.

But he didn’t expose him.

Because Marcus had something against him.

Something from years earlier.

Something involving a business deal that went wrong.

My father had spent years trying to fix his mistake.

And Marcus used that guilt as a weapon.

Then I reached the final pages.

The handwriting became messier.

Like my father had written them quickly.

*The accident was not meant to kill you.*

I stopped.

My heart raced.

I read the sentence again.

*It was meant to scare you into giving up control of the company.*

I closed the journal.

The room felt cold.

Marcus didn’t want me dead.

He wanted me powerless.

The wheelchair.

The hospital.

The emotional damage.

It was all part of a plan.

My phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

“Did you open it?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

“You know now.””

“Why didn’t you tell me about my father?””

“Because it wasn’t my place.””

I looked at the journal.

“You protected everyone except me.””

Her voice softened.

“I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you were wrong.””

“Yes.””

She didn’t argue.

That surprised me.

“I was wrong.””

The honesty made the anger harder.

Because I wanted someone simple to blame.

But life wasn’t simple.

Not anymore.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“Did Marcus know about this package?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“He saw your father give it to me.””

I stood.

“What?””

“The day before the accident.””

My mind raced.

“You had the package the whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

Her voice broke.

“Because Marcus took it.””

I froze.

“He took it from you?””

“Yes.””

“Then how do I have it?””

A long silence.

Then Claire whispered:

“Because someone stole it back.””

The answer was obvious.

Ethan.

Before I could respond, there was a loud crash outside my apartment.

I froze.

“Daniel?””

I moved toward the window.

The street below was empty.

But my apartment door…

was open.

I never left it open.

“Claire.””

“What happened?””

“Someone is here.””

The call went silent.

I slowly walked toward the hallway.

My heart pounded.

The apartment was dark.

Too dark.

Then a voice came from the living room.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

I knew that voice.

After all this time.

After all the lies.

After all the pain.

I heard it again.

“Daniel, don’t turn on the lights.””

My breathing stopped.

“Ethan?””

A quiet laugh came from the darkness.

“Yes.””

I took one step forward.

“Where have you been?””

A pause.

Then he answered:

“Hiding from the people who destroyed your life.””

The lights suddenly flickered on.

And I saw him.

My brother.

Standing in my apartment.

Older.

Exhausted.

Holding a folder.

But what shocked me wasn’t that Ethan was alive.

It was what he said next.

“Daniel…”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“The person who ordered your accident wasn’t Marcus.””

He placed the folder on the table.

“It was someone much closer.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Ethan looked toward the door.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Someone who knew exactly when you would be driving that night.””
