Chapter 15: The Room Beneath the House
The old Carter house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The paint was faded.
The garden was overgrown.
The wooden fence leaned slightly to the left.
But the place still felt alive.
Like my childhood memories were waiting inside.
Ethan stood beside me.
“You sure about this?””
I looked at the key in my hand.
“No.””
He smiled faintly.
“At least you’re honest.””
I opened the front door.
The house smelled like dust and old memories.
My father’s books were still on the shelves.
The family photos were still hanging.
A frozen version of a life that no longer existed.
Rachel followed behind us.
She looked uncomfortable.
“I haven’t been here since he died.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I felt guilty.””
I didn’t answer.
Everyone carried guilt.
The difference was what they did with it.
We searched the study.
The room where my father spent most of his time.
The desk.
The shelves.
The drawers.
Nothing.
Then Ethan noticed something.
“Daniel.””
He pointed at the floor.
A small scratch near the bookshelf.
My father always had a habit of hiding things.
Behind things.
Under things.
Inside things.
We moved the bookshelf.
Behind it was a small metal door.
I stared.
“How long was this here?””
Rachel whispered:
“Years.””
The key fit perfectly.
The door opened.
Inside was a narrow staircase.
A hidden room.
My father’s final secret.
We walked down slowly.
At the bottom was a single table.
On it sat a folder.
And a note.
My name.
Again.
I picked it up.
*Daniel,*
*If you found this room, then the truth finally reached you.*
My hands shook.
*I need you to understand something. The person who betrayed me was not my enemy. They were someone I loved.*
I looked at Ethan.
Then Rachel.
The note continued.
*They believed they were protecting the family.*
A noise came from upstairs.
We all froze.
Someone was inside the house.
Ethan turned off the light.
We stood in darkness.
Footsteps moved above us.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone knew exactly where they were going.
Rachel whispered:
“Marcus.””
But Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked terrified.
“Marcus wouldn’t come alone.””
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice called from above.
A voice I knew.
A voice I never expected.
“Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
Because it wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t Claire.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It was someone from my past.
Someone I thought could never hurt me.
“Daniel, I know you’re down there.””
Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Don’t answer.””
The voice came again.
“I’m sorry.””
A pause.
Then:
“I should have told you the truth a long time ago.””
I stared into the darkness.
Because I knew that voice.
And I knew the person standing above us.
My mother.
A woman I believed had spent the last year mourning my pain.
A woman who had never once been a suspect.
The hidden room suddenly felt like a trap.
Then the door above us opened wider.
And my mother whispered:
“Your father didn’t hide the agreement.””
May you like
Silence.
“He hid what I did.””
