Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
The silence after Claire’s confession felt heavier than any scream.
I looked at Marcus.
He didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
A person who was innocent would fight.
A person who was innocent would demand answers.
Marcus simply stood there.
Calculating.
“Tell him everything,” I said.
Claire shook her head.
“I can’t.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because I’m scared.””
I almost laughed.
A year ago, I would have comforted her.
I would have told her everything would be okay.
But that version of me was gone.
“You should have been scared when I was lying in a hospital bed wondering why the woman I loved stopped visiting.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
“Sorry doesn’t bring back a year.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“You’re worried.””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
I pointed at him.
“Because Claire is about to tell the truth.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Claire, don’t.””
That was the first time I saw it.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Claire noticed too.
And something changed in her expression.
She finally understood who she had been protecting.
She took a deep breath.
“The night of the accident…”
She looked at me.
“I was supposed to meet you.””
I said nothing.
“I was going to tell you something.””
“What?””
“That I knew about Marcus.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I found messages between him and another person. I didn’t know everything, but I knew something was wrong.””
My voice became quiet.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked ashamed.
“Because Marcus threatened me.””
“With what?””
She looked at the floor.
“With you.””
The answer made no sense.
Until she continued.
“He told me if I exposed him, you would lose everything. Your company. Your reputation. Your future.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
She cried silently.
“I was afraid.””
I looked away.
For years, I had wondered how someone could leave when I needed them most.
Now I knew.
Fear had beaten love.
But that didn’t mean I could forgive it.
“What happened that night?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I was driving to meet you.””
My body froze.
“You were?””
“Yes.””
“Then why wasn’t I with you?””
“Because Marcus called me.””
The room went silent.
“He told me you wanted to talk to me privately. He said he would meet you first.””
My fingers curled.
“He set it up.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus finally spoke.
“You’re both making a mistake.””
I turned toward him.
“You’re finished.””
He smiled.
A cold, empty smile.
“You really think you’ve won?””
The confidence was back.
That scared me.
“You have evidence,” he said.
“Congratulations.””
He walked closer.
“But evidence disappears.””
The threat was obvious.
I stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus stopped.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“I spent a year being underestimated.””
I tapped my wheelchair.
“Do you know what happens when someone has nothing left to lose?””
Marcus said nothing.
“They stop being afraid.””
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke.
A voice I recognized immediately.
Ethan.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I turned away from Marcus.
“What happened?””
His breathing was heavy.
“Someone found me.””
My heart dropped.
“Where are you?””
“Forget where I am.””
His voice became urgent.
“You need to know something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The accident wasn’t planned because Marcus wanted your company.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
Ethan whispered:
“Because you were about to discover who Marcus was working for.””
The line crackled.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
His final words froze my blood.
“The person behind everything is someone you trust.””
The call ended.
And slowly…
May you like
everyone in the room turned toward the same person.
Claire.
