Chapter 4: The Brother Who Vanished
I stared at the message on my phone until the letters blurred.
*“Daniel, I know the truth about your accident… and Claire was never supposed to find out.””*
And beneath it was a name I hadn’t seen in eleven months.
*Ethan.*
My younger brother.
The same brother everyone told me had left town after my accident.
The same brother who supposedly couldn’t handle watching me lose my ability to walk.
The same brother who disappeared without a goodbye.
My hand tightened around the phone.
For a moment, the ballroom disappeared.
The music.
The guests.
Claire.
Everything faded.
All I could hear was Ethan’s voice from the hospital hallway.
“Daniel, I need you to trust me.””
That was the last thing he said before he vanished.
I walked outside into the cold night air.
The hotel’s golden lights reflected against the wet pavement. Cars moved slowly along the street, unaware that my entire understanding of the last year had just collapsed.
My phone rang.
I answered immediately.
“Ethan?””
There was silence.
Then a shaky breath.
“Daniel.””
My chest tightened.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you that yet.””
I closed my eyes.
“You disappear for almost a year, send me one terrifying message, and then tell me you can’t tell me where you are?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“No, Ethan. You don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You left me when I needed you most.””
Another silence.
Then he said quietly:
“I didn’t leave you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I was forced to disappear.””
I looked back at the ballroom doors.
Through the glass, I could see Claire standing alone. Marcus was talking to someone, his expression tense.
“Forced by who?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
“Ethan.””
“Daniel, listen carefully. Do you remember the night of the accident?””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Of course I remember.””
“Do you remember the truck?””
“Yes.””
“Do you remember seeing the driver?””
I frowned.
“No.””
“That’s because you were unconscious.””
I gripped the phone.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“The accident wasn’t random.””
The street suddenly felt too quiet.
“What are you talking about?””
“I found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Evidence that someone wanted you gone.””
My heart started pounding.
I looked through the window again.
Claire was laughing at something Marcus said.
The woman who had spent the last year telling me I had changed.
The woman who knew more about my accident than she ever admitted.
“Was it Claire?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“Then who?””
Another pause.
“Marcus.””
The name hit like a punch.
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
Ethan continued.
“Before the accident, you were investigating financial problems inside your company. You remember those missing accounts?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
“I found out Marcus was involved.””
My mind raced.
Marcus had joined my company shortly before my accident.
He was charming.
Ambitious.
Always offering to help.
He was also the person Claire chose after leaving me.
“No,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
Ethan’s voice became urgent.
“Daniel, you need to understand. Marcus didn’t just take Claire from you.””
I looked back at the ballroom.
“He tried to take everything.””
The call ended.
Not because I hung up.
Because Ethan did.
I stood there for several minutes, unable to move.
Then the ballroom doors opened behind me.
Claire stepped outside.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t turn around.
“What do you want?””
Her footsteps stopped.
“I saw your face when you read that message.””
Silence.
“Who was it?””
I laughed bitterly.
“You’re asking me?””
She looked hurt.
“I’m trying to understand.””
“No.””
I finally turned around.
“You’re trying to control the situation.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“That’s unfair.””
“Is it?””
She looked away.
For a second, I saw the old Claire.
The woman who used to know exactly when I was hurting.
Then she disappeared.
“I know about Ethan,” she said.
My entire body went still.
“What did you say?””
Claire’s face changed.
She realized she had revealed too much.
“Claire.””
She looked nervous.
“I didn’t mean—”
“How do you know about Ethan?””
She stepped back.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You don’t get to say please now.””
The hotel doors opened again.
Marcus walked out.
“What’s going on?””
Claire immediately looked at him.
That small movement told me everything.
She wasn’t surprised he was there.
She expected him.
Marcus stared at me.
Then at Claire.
“Did you tell him?””
The words hung in the air.
I felt my stomach drop.
Claire whispered:
“Marcus…”
He had already answered my question.
I looked between them.
“You both knew.””
Neither spoke.
The truth was finally standing in front of me.
And it was uglier than I imagined.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Daniel, there are things you don’t understand.””
I smiled.
“You’re right.””
I turned my phone screen toward him.
“But I’m about to.””
His face changed when he saw Ethan’s message.
For the first time, Marcus looked afraid.
And that was when I knew.
