Chapter 7: The Person I Never Suspected

The room felt smaller after Ethan’s call.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone heard the same thing.

*“The person behind everything is someone you trust.””*

And now every eye was on Claire.

She looked at me with a mixture of fear and confusion.

“Daniel…”

I stared at her.

For the first time, I didn’t know what I was looking at.

The woman I loved?

The woman who betrayed me?

Or someone who had been hiding a truth even darker than I imagined?

Marcus broke the silence.

“You see?”” he said quietly.

“This is what happens when people start making accusations without proof.””

I looked at him.

“You’re enjoying this.””

His expression barely changed.

“Because you’re wrong.””

I walked closer to Claire.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

“Claire.””

She looked down.

“I don’t know what Ethan meant.””

I watched her carefully.

“Do you know who he’s talking about?””

She swallowed.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Almost too perfectly.

I turned away.

A year ago, I would have believed her.

Now I noticed everything.

The hesitation.

The nervous glance toward Marcus.

The way her fingers kept touching her necklace.

Small things.

Things people ignored.

Things people revealed when they were lying.

“I need to leave,” Claire whispered.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I rarely raised my voice.

But this time, I needed the truth.

“Not again.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“What does that mean?””

“It means every time something becomes difficult, you run.””

The words hit her.

Good.

They were supposed to.

“You ran when I got hurt.””

“Daniel—”

“You ran when I needed answers.””

I pointed toward Marcus.

“And you ran straight to the person who caused it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

I looked at him.

“You’ve been saying that all night.””

His face tightened.

“Because you’re emotional.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m finally paying attention.””

I left the hotel before anyone could stop me.

But I didn’t go home.

I went to the one place where the truth had started.

My old company building.

The place where I spent ten years building something from nothing.

The place where Marcus entered my life.

The place where everything collapsed.

The security guard recognized me immediately.

“Mr. Carter?””

I nodded.

“I need access to the old archives.””

He hesitated.

“Sir, those files were transferred after the company restructuring.””

“Transferred where?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I was told never to discuss them.””

I stared at him.

“Who told you?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Marcus.

Again.

I walked toward the elevator.

The guard stepped in front of me.

“I’m sorry, sir.””

I looked at him.

“Are you?””

He looked away.

And I understood.

Fear controlled this building.

Not leadership.

Not loyalty.

Fear.

I turned around.

“Then tell me one thing.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Who was the last person to access my private files?””

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“Mr. Carter…”

“Who?””

He whispered:

“Claire.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

I stood there frozen.

“No.””

The guard looked guilty.

“She came here three days after your accident.””

Three days.

When I was lying in a hospital bed.

When doctors were telling my family I might never walk again.

Claire was here.

Looking through my files.

“Did she take anything?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked around the empty lobby.

Then I saw something.

A security camera.

“Can I see the footage?””

The guard hesitated.

“Sir…”

“Please.””

Something in my voice made him stop.

Ten minutes later, we were watching the footage.

There she was.

Claire.

Walking into my office.

Alone.

She opened my desk drawer.

Removed a small black folder.

Then she made a phone call.

The audio was unclear.

But one sentence came through.

Her voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“I found it.””

My blood turned cold.

The guard looked at me.

“Sir…”

I couldn’t speak.

Because I knew that folder.

I knew exactly what was inside.

The investigation documents.

The evidence about Marcus.

The evidence that could have exposed him.

Claire had it.

But why?

My phone vibrated.

A message.

From Ethan.

*“Daniel, don’t trust the video. Someone wants you to see Claire as the enemy.””*

I frowned.

Another message appeared.

*“The truth is worse.””*

Then a photo loaded.

A photo taken years ago.

Before my accident.

Before Claire left.

Before everything fell apart.

The picture showed me, Ethan, and Claire standing outside my company.

But behind us was another person.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been part of my life for years.

And beneath the image, Ethan wrote:

*“She wasn’t working with Marcus.””*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then read the next line.

*“She was investigating him.””*
