Chapter 5: The Evidence Nobody Wanted Found

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat in my apartment with every light turned on, surrounded by old documents, company records, and memories I had tried to bury.

The wheelchair sat beside me.

A reminder of everything I lost.

But now it represented something else.

A disguise.

Everyone thought it made me weaker.

They never realized it gave me time to watch.

To listen.

To learn who people really were.

At 6:14 in the morning, my front door buzzer rang.

I grabbed the security monitor.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying a brown envelope.

I knew him.

He was my former company accountant, Robert Hale.

I opened the door.

“Robert?””

He looked over his shoulder before entering.

“Daniel, we don’t have much time.””

“What’s happening?””

He placed the envelope on the table.

“Your brother contacted me three days ago.””

My heart stopped.

“Ethan is alive?””

Robert looked at me sadly.

“He never stopped trying to help you.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, bank records, and photographs.

The first page showed a transfer from one of my company accounts.

The recipient wasn’t a business partner.

It was Marcus’s private investment account.

My hands went cold.

“How long?””

Robert looked down.

“Almost a year before your accident.””

I kept reading.

Marcus had been moving money through fake companies.

Small amounts.

Thousands at a time.

Careful enough not to trigger alarms.

But enough to build millions.

“He was stealing from me.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“Because I tried.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Two weeks before your accident, I prepared a report.””

“And?””

“Marcus found out.””

A heavy silence filled the room.

“What did he do?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“He threatened my family.””

The words made my jaw tighten.

“And Ethan?””

Robert pointed at the envelope.

“Your brother found the same evidence.””

I sat down.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Robert hesitated.

“Because someone inside your company warned him that you were in danger.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I already knew.

Claire.

That evening, I went back to the hotel.

Not because I wanted answers.

Because I wanted to see if they would lie again.

Claire was waiting in the lobby.

She looked exhausted.

“I knew you would come.””

“Did you?””

She nodded.

“Daniel…”

I held up my hand.

“No excuses.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s a small word for what happened.””

She looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“You already had everything.””

“No, I didn’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“After your accident, everything changed.””

I laughed quietly.

“For me.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

That one word hurt more than any insult.

“You don’t even hear yourself.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I was young.””

“Claire, we were thirty.””

“I didn’t know how to handle it.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t want to handle it.””

Before she could answer, Marcus appeared.

Of course he did.

Always at the right moment.

“You need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Still giving orders?””

His face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

I stepped closer.

“Actually, I do.””

I pulled out one of the documents.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You recognize this?””

Marcus said nothing.

“Your account. Your transfers. Your fake companies.””

He smiled.

“You think paperwork proves anything?””

“No.””

I folded the paper.

“But fear does.””

His smile disappeared.

Because he knew.

I saw it.

For the first time, Marcus wasn’t confident.

He was worried.

Then Claire suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

She was staring at the document.

“Where did you get that?””

I pulled away.

“Why?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because that document was destroyed.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Claire looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“I watched him burn those files.””

The lobby went silent.

“You knew?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know what they were at the time.””

I stared at her.

“But now you do.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

A moment passed.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“The night of your accident…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“Claire.””

Her lips trembled.

“I wasn’t supposed to be in the car.””

My heartbeat changed.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Marcus.

And for the first time since I knew him…

Marcus looked scared.

May you like

Claire whispered:

“Because someone changed the schedule.””
