Chapter 14: The Woman Behind the Calendar

Nobody spoke.

Rachel stared at the photograph.

Her face lost all color.

“Where did you get that?””

Ethan looked at her.

“You tell us.””

Rachel stepped backward.

“I didn’t take that.””

“But you were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“I was visiting you.””

I almost laughed.

“Visiting me?””

My voice became sharper.

“The same way everyone else was visiting me while hiding things?””

Rachel looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

I pointed at the photo.

“Then tell me what is fair.””

The room fell silent.

Finally, Rachel sat down.

“I need to tell you something.””

I crossed my arms.

“I’m listening.””

She looked at Ethan.

“After the accident, I found out Marcus was involved.””

Ethan frowned.

“When?””

“Two days after.””

“Then why didn’t you tell Daniel?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

My entire body froze.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He was alive then.””

The room became quiet.

“Explain.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Your father came to the hospital.””

I stared.

“My father was dead before my surgery.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“But before he died, he gave me instructions.””

I felt something heavy in my chest.

“What instructions?””

“To protect you.””

I shook my head.

“By lying?””

She looked at me.

“By keeping you alive.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because suddenly everyone’s lies had the same excuse.

Protection.

Everyone hurt me because they claimed they were saving me.

Rachel continued.

“Your father knew Marcus would come after anyone who helped you.””

“And you still stayed?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because he trusted me.””

I looked away.

My father trusted her.

That mattered.

But not enough.

“Then why did you let Claire take the blame?””

Rachel looked confused.

“What?””

“She was destroyed.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You watched her leave.””

“I tried to stop her.””

“And?””

“She told me she had to.””

I frowned.

“She chose that?””

Rachel nodded.

“She believed if Marcus thought she hated you, he would stop watching you.””

I sat down slowly.

The truth was becoming impossible to separate from the lies.

Then Rachel reached into her bag.

She removed a small envelope.

“I was saving this.””

“For what?””

She handed it to me.

“Until you were ready.””

Inside was a letter.

Not from Claire.

Not from Ethan.

From Marcus.

My hands tightened.

“You had a letter from him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he sent it to me.””

I opened it.

The message was short.

*Rachel,*

*The accident worked. Daniel is no longer a threat.*

My breathing stopped.

I continued.

*Make sure he never discovers the original agreement.*

*If he does, you know what happens to your family.*

I looked up.

“Your family?””

Rachel nodded.

“My daughter.””

The anger in my chest shifted.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

Because suddenly I understood.

Marcus didn’t just control people with money.

He controlled them with fear.

“What original agreement?”” Ethan asked.

Rachel looked at me.

“The one your father made.””

I opened my eyes.

“The agreement that started everything?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she said:

“Marcus has it.””

Ethan stood.

“Impossible.””

Rachel looked at him.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He doesn’t know I copied it.””

My heart started beating faster.

“You have a copy?””

She nodded.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

Rachel looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Somewhere Marcus would never look.””

I waited.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a key.

An old metal key.

I recognized it.

It belonged to my father.

“The agreement is hidden in your childhood home.””

I stared at the key.

“My father’s house was sold.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“That was the story Marcus wanted everyone to believe.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Only four words.

*“Don’t go home, Daniel.””*

Then another message appeared.

*“Your father didn’t hide the agreement.””*

A pause.

May you like

Then:

*“He hid the person who betrayed him.””*
