Chapter 8: The Woman Who Tried to Save Me

I read Ethan’s message over and over.

Until the meaning finally settled.

Claire wasn’t helping Marcus.

She was investigating him.

But that created a question I couldn’t escape.

Why did she leave me?

Why did she humiliate me?

Why did she make me believe I was the reason she walked away?

I drove to the rehabilitation center where I spent the first months after my accident.

The place smelled exactly the same.

Disinfectant.

Coffee.

Fresh laundry.

The smell of people rebuilding broken lives.

My therapist, Dr. Sarah Miller, was surprised to see me.

“Daniel?””

I smiled faintly.

“Hi, Sarah.””

She looked at my legs.

Then at me.

“You’re standing.””

“Sometimes.””

She smiled.

“I knew you would.””

I sat across from her.

“I need to ask you something.””

Her expression changed.

“What happened?””

“After my accident… did Claire visit?””

Sarah became quiet.

That was enough.

“She did.””

My chest tightened.

“How many times?””

“A lot.””

I stared at her.

“But she told me she couldn’t watch me suffer.””

Sarah looked confused.

“Daniel, that’s not what happened.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

Sarah folded her hands.

“Claire came here every day.””

I felt like the air disappeared.

“She sat beside your bed when you were unconscious.””

I looked away.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Sarah sighed.

“Because she asked me not to.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Because she was afraid someone was watching.””

My heartbeat changed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

The pieces were moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“Sarah, tell me everything.””

She hesitated.

Then she opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.

“She left this with me.””

I stared at it.

“When?””

“The day before she ended the relationship.””

My hands trembled.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“She told me not to unless you discovered the truth.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

Claire’s handwriting.

Daniel,

If you’re reading this, it means something went wrong.

I’m sorry.

I’m sorry for everything I said.

I’m sorry for making you hate me.

But I needed Marcus to believe I had given up on you.

Because if he thought I was still protecting you, he would hurt you again.

I stopped reading.

Again.

My eyes moved down.

The next sentence broke something inside me.

*“I was never leaving you. I was trying to save you.””*

I closed my eyes.

For a year, I carried anger.

A year of believing she abandoned me.

A year of replaying every cruel word.

And now I wondered if those words had been a sacrifice.

Sarah touched the table.

“Daniel.””

I looked up.

“She loved you.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“Then why didn’t she trust me?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Fear.

Fear made people do terrible things.

That evening, I found Claire sitting alone outside the hotel.

She looked different.

Smaller.

Broken.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Daniel.””

I held up the letter.

Her face went pale.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

Silence.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Marcus knew about the investigation.””

“You were investigating him?””

She nodded.

“I found suspicious transactions. I told Ethan.””

I froze.

“You worked with Ethan?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he disappear?””

Her expression changed.

“Because Marcus found out.””

The pieces connected.

Ethan wasn’t running away.

He was hiding.

Claire continued.

“I thought if Marcus believed I hated you, he would stop watching me.””

“So you destroyed me.””

She looked down.

“I thought you would hate me.””

“I did.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The honesty hurt.

More than excuses would have.

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Marcus had someone inside your family.””

My body went still.

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“The person helping him wasn’t just a business partner.””

She looked at me.

“They had access to your home.””

My voice lowered.

“Who?””

Claire looked terrified.

Then she said:

“Your father.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“He was being blackmailed.””

I shook my head.

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because he left something behind.””

A package sat beside her.

Old.

Dusty.

Sealed.

She pushed it toward me.

“Your father wanted you to have this if Marcus ever found out the truth.””

I picked it up.

My name was written on the front.

In my father’s handwriting.

May you like

And underneath my name were four words:

*“I failed you, son.””*
