Chapter 6: The House That Stayed Hidden
The old house sat at the end of a forgotten road.
The paint was peeling.
The grass had grown wild.
The windows were covered in dust.
But the moment I stepped out of the car, I knew.
I knew this place.
Not because I remembered it.
Because my body remembered it.
A strange feeling moved through me.
Like I was standing inside a memory someone had stolen.
Vanessa stood beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
For the first time in years, we weren’t husband and wife.
We were two people standing in front of a secret.
“You’re sure this is where she was?”” I asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“How did you find her?””
She looked at the house.
“Because Elena called me.””
I turned toward her.
“You said you found her.””
Vanessa looked guilty.
“I did.””
“You lied.””
“I was scared.””
I stared at her.
Everyone had the same excuse.
Fear.
Fear.
Fear.
But my mother was the one who paid the price.
“Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“I was twenty-six. I was working at a law office. Elena came in looking for help.””
“Why you?””
“Because she knew my father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“My father was involved in your family’s business.””
The pieces started connecting.
Everyone around me was connected.
Everyone except me.
Vanessa continued.
“Elena knew your father had hidden money. She knew someone else was helping him.””
“Who?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I didn’t believe her.
But before I could push further, the front door creaked open.
Both of us froze.
The lock was broken.
Someone had been here recently.
I stepped inside.
The smell hit me immediately.
Old wood.
Dust.
And something else.
Lavender.
My mother’s perfume.
My chest tightened.
“Daniel?””
I ignored Vanessa.
I walked deeper into the house.
The walls were empty.
The furniture was gone.
But on the kitchen wall, there were small marks.
Height measurements.
My name written beside them.
Daniel — Age 5.
Daniel — Age 6.
My fingers touched the faded writing.
She had been here.
She had watched me grow.
She had loved me.
And I never knew.
Behind me, Vanessa whispered:
“She came here every year.””
I turned around.
“What?””
“She watched you.””
My eyes filled with anger.
“Then why didn’t she come to me?””
Vanessa looked heartbroken.
“Because every time she tried, someone stopped her.””
“Who?””
Before she answered, we heard a noise upstairs.
A floorboard creaking.
Someone was inside.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
The sound came again.
Slow footsteps.
Coming down the stairs.
A figure appeared in the hallway.
An older man.
Holding a folder.
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
His face changed.
“You shouldn’t have brought him here.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who are you?””
The man tightened his grip on the folder.
“I’m the reason your mother disappeared.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“No…”
The man looked at me.
And said:
“Your mother wasn’t running from Marcus.””
A pause.
“She was running from me.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Elena.
Alive.
Taken only three months ago.
May you like
And written on the back were six words:
*She never stopped waiting for you.*
