Chapter 16: The Truth Buried Before I Was Born
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that happens when people have nothing to say.
The kind that happens when everyone is afraid of what comes next.
I stared at Adrian.
Then at my mother.
Then at the document sitting on the table.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
My entire life.
My memories.
My mother’s voice.
My father’s hands holding mine.
Everything suddenly felt like it was standing on cracked ground.
Adrian looked almost sympathetic.
“You deserve the truth.””
I laughed.
“The truth?””
I pointed at the document.
“You walked into my house after destroying my family, and now you want to give me the truth?””
His expression didn’t change.
“I want to give you what Elena never could.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You still protect him.””
“Because he’s my son.””
Adrian smiled.
“Is he?””
The words cut through the room.
My mother’s face changed.
Not guilt.
Pain.
That was worse.
I picked up the document.
My hands shook as I read.
The name.
The date.
The hospital.
But something was missing.
The parents’ names had been removed.
“This proves nothing.””
Adrian nodded.
“Of course you would say that.””
“Because you’re lying.””
“Am I?””
He looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Everyone turned.
My father looked like he wanted to disappear.
“Tell him what?””
Marcus swallowed.
“When Daniel was born…”
My heart pounded.
“Marcus.””
My mother’s voice warned him.
But he continued.
“When Daniel was born, there was another baby.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your mother gave birth during an emergency.””
I stared at him.
“Another baby?””
“Yes.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Your real parents died that night.””
I felt dizzy.
“What?””
My mother grabbed the edge of the table.
“Stop.””
But Adrian continued.
“You were not Elena’s biological child.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why did she raise me?””
His smile disappeared slightly.
“Because she made a promise.””
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
“What promise?””
She looked at me.
The pain in her eyes told me she had carried this for decades.
“I promised your parents I would protect you.””
The room became completely still.
I couldn’t speak.
“My parents?””
She nodded.
“You were born to my closest friends.””
“Who?””
She looked down.
“Daniel and Sarah Miller.””
My name.
My parents’ names.
The first time I had ever heard them.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her tears fell.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would think I wasn’t your mother.””
I stared at her.
After everything.
After all the lies.
That was the one thing I understood.
Because she had been my mother.
Not because of blood.
Because she stayed.
Adrian interrupted.
“But she still hid the truth.””
I turned toward him.
“Why are you here?””
His expression hardened.
“Because the truth about you matters.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re here because of the inheritance.””
For the first time, he looked angry.
“You have no idea what your existence caused.””
“My existence?””
I laughed.
“I was a baby.””
“You were the heir.””
“There it is.””
I pointed at him.
“You don’t see me. You see money.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Daniel is right.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stood beside my mother.
For the first time, I saw them on the same side.
“My father spent his life chasing power.””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“And you became exactly like him.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You have no right to judge me.””
“I signed those papers because I was scared.””
Her voice strengthened.
“But you hurt people because you wanted more.””
Adrian smiled coldly.
“Still protecting him.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because he’s finally learning the truth.””
Suddenly, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Again.
But this time, there was an attachment.
A video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my mother.
Years younger.
Holding a baby.
My baby self.
Then another person entered the room.
A person I recognized immediately.
Marcus.
But he looked terrified.
My mother’s younger voice filled the room.
“Marcus, if anything happens to me, promise me you’ll tell Daniel.””
The video ended.
Everyone stared at Marcus.
I looked at my father.
“What did you promise her?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I promised I would tell you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
A tear rolled down his face.
“Because the person who threatened Elena…”
He looked at Adrian.
“…wasn’t working alone.””
The room went cold.
“Who else?””
Marcus looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your real father’s killer.””
